conforming an XML with incorrect file names

PostFri Apr 19, 2024 9:30 pm

Hi everyone,

A director I'm working with was cutting in Premiere with dailies, and he renamed all the files. Now I need to conform the timeline with timecode only. Is there a way to do this? It's only two days of production, so I can sort out which files I want it to look at for accurate TC.

Working in 18.6.4 on a Mac. Conforming (renamed) ProRes to .R3Ds

Any insights would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Frazer

I hate when clients do this. There are far too many ignorant people that don't understand the use of Metadata, which they CAN change to Scene/Take Number as much as they want. Changing original camera file names is bad and wrong, and I wish more schools would remind students this.

Andy Mees' method above can work, but you're always going to run into file conflicts that will require human intervention in order to organize the timeline chaos. Be sure to charge the client for your wasted extra time in fixing this.

There are exceptions for folks who know what they're doing, but a good Rule of Thumb (which will always work correctly) is to copy the entire media card to your working drive, and never change it's contents.

That's what I learned, anyway.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Thanks everyone!

I also found that, if I severely limited the clips available in the bins upon input, Resolve would move on to timecode, once it saw that there were no clip name matches.

Cheers,
