Why doesn't Da Vinci Resolve use more memory?

PostThu Apr 25, 2024 11:51 pm

I'm curious, why doesn't my computer use more resources. The playback is dreadfully bad, and I thought I just needed a better computer, but then it's not really using all the resources anyway, so I guess that won't help.

It uses what it needs when it needs it.

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

your machine has 32g, and Resolve is using 17g
my machines have 128g, at times i see Resolve using 70+g, but more typicaly around the same as you see, currently i see 20g sys ram useage, it's a feature with 2100 edits open

my guess is Resolve will use what it needs up to % of the total ram on the system?

the only variable that seems to effect the use of sys ram is total number of projects + timelines open, when i use dynamic project switching and several projects with large timelines indexed i'll see sys ram use rise

other than that variable, i don't see much use of the sys ram, but i rarely touch Fusion

I bet if you fire up Fusion, it'll use more RAM.

DR, apart from Fusion, doesn't get faster with more RAM under Windows, it's all about GPU power.
Apple silicon is different, since the GPU cores can profit from RAM.

Using more memory won't speed up playback.

Slow playback might be a codec that isn't accelerated by the media decoder (GPU/IGPU) . It might be you've added effects or something that the machine is struggling with.

Go to the menu bar and click "DaVinci Resolve --> Preferences..."

Click the "System" tab at the top of the dialogue box.

Click "Memory and GPU" in the left panel.

Do you have a limit on the how much memory Resolve or Fusion will consume?

Resolve and Fusion won't necessarily use up the entire amount you've allowed, but they definitely won't use more than that.

If only that was the case :(
