What drives to add?

PostWed May 22, 2024 11:24 pm

I recently built a new computer (specs in my signature) to use as my primary video and photography compute and want to add 2-3 more drives for both bulk storge and performance. I have been using my laptop with a 7.27 (8)TB external drive that has 1.31TB free. So I will be transferring almost 7TB just to start.

On the new motherboard, the OS drive is a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB m.2 NVMe

I have available open:
1 PCIe 4.0x4 M.2 NVMe and two M.2 PCIe 4.0x4 SATA slots
6 SATA 6G slots
The case can hold two 2.5" SSD drives (plus the 3 M.2 drives) and 2 (maybe more) conventional 3.5" HDDs.
I would like to start learning more about Fusion, but relatively simple stuff.

I am thinking mirrored HDDs of 10 or more TB for bulk storage and backup, and as many NVMe or SSD drives as the budget then allows. Assume up to 1K available.

Thoughts on type/size of drives for cost effective performance in DR.

Here's what I would choose:

C: System (NVMe)
D: Libraries/Gallery (NVMe)
E: Exports (10+ TB HDD)
F: Media (10+ TB HDD)
G: Cache/Proxies (10+ HDD)

You could also separate Proxies onto a dedicated drive.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

at home i have a 8 bay / dual 6g SAS enclosure and matching pcie card
in the cage i have
- raid set 1 = 6 x16Tb Seagate SAS helium drives in raid5, gives me <80b working space @ +/- 1200 Mbs
- raid set 2 = 2x 12Tb WDRed_Pro SATA in raid0
- machine has 2x 1Tb SSD mirrored / boot drive
also have another 4 x 2bay external raid0 for moveing media from my studio -to- home -to- delivery partners

raid set2 has reuse media, stock, logo's, shows in medium term storage (waiting for VFX usualy)
raid set1 has show media & caches (don't use proxies)
i export films to one of the 2 bay raids, short form to a 4Tb external SSD

but my workflow is unlikely to be cost effective for Jim, and. likewise Jim's choices not optimal for my needs

end game = buying storage faster than your system can use is a waste, so figure out what speed you really need, then look at how much storage is needed, what the options are - and always keep the boot drive clean

Thanks all. For my future needs, I think Jim's setup, with some slight modifications , is what I will work towards. I had a little budget setback today that will delay ordering some of it for a month or so, but Memorial Day sales gave a good start.
