I've tried for several days to install DaVinci Resolve 19 and also 18.6.6. on a clean version of Ubuntu 24.04

Every time I get messages that there are missing packages. I wasted hours trying to figure it out.

I finally added the skip package check trick that I found elsewhere.

It is installed, but it does not run. Why? It's missing packages and there is no suggestion in the instructions how to get around the problem.

Sadly, I can't use Black Magic Design products, because they don't install.

Sounds like a bad idea ! This leads to your missing packages problem.
What packages are missing ?
What errors do you get ?

You could try to convert the installation file provided by bmd to deb with:
https://www.danieltufvesson.com/makeresolvedeb

After going through all the steps, if it doesn't start open a terminal and start resolve with:

Code: Select all

/opt/resolve/bin/resolve


if you get:

symbol lookup error: /lib64/libpango-1.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_string_free_and_steal

Do the following

sudo cp /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libglib-2.0.so.0 /opt/resolve/libs/


if it still doesn't run and you get:

symbol lookup error: /opt/resolve/bin/../libs/libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_task_set_static_name

Code: Select all

cd /opt/resolve/libs
sudo mkdir not_used
sudo mv libgio* not_used
sudo mv libgmodule* not_used


I am also experiencing the same error trying to launch Resolve on OpenSUSE. I actually went as far and try installing on Rocky linux because I thought that was BlackMagic preferred variant, but out dated and non-existing lib issues persist. Is there any chance of getting a new version of Resolve that uses current libs.

Open Suse is not Debian-based, so this workflow might not work.

Christoph Schmid Thank you SO much!! I have no idea why the experience is so much worse after going from Resolve on Ubuntu 22.04 to 24.04! Your help was invaluable!


NOTE: I was trying to install Resolve 19.0.1 and Christoph's instructions worked. But then I had an issue where Resolve wouldn't activate. I found another thread that helped. I had to roll back to Resolve Studio 19.0 unfortunately, but it did activate luckily and is now optimizing the Neural Engines.

Blackmagic Design, PLEASE consider Flatpak or Appimage for your Linux applications! That would make our lives and your live so much easier!! One installer, ALL Linux distributions!

I have the same problem. I had to go back to Resolve Studio 19, 19.0.1, it doesn't accept my license code.

Linux Mint Mate Wilma.
AMD Ryzen 5 2600X, 32 GB RAM, 2 NVMe 1 SSD, CUDA 2.6, and Nvidia 1050ti, which I just upgraded to a 3050 today.

I've tried the official kernels, the Liquorix ones, and the Xanmod ones, and the problem persists.

I also did a regression from Kernel 6.10 to 6.0, and it doesn't work either, so it must be a change in the authentication process from Resolve Studio 19 to 19.0.1. I suggest checking the changes in this function, and reverting them to their previous operation.

I'm waiting to add another disk, to test it again with Linux Mint Mate Virginia.

I am currently running Linux Mint 21.3 (Virginia) with the NVIDIA 550 driver from the Proprietary GPU Drivers PPA.
Resolve Studio installation was via the recent 1.72 makeresolvdeb utility. Seems to work.

I realize this is coming months after your original post, but if you're still looking for a solution, I think my script might help resolve the issues you've been experiencing.

I’ve created an Ansible script that automates the entire installation process of DaVinci Resolve on Ubuntu 24.04. It handles downloading the official installer, setting up symlinks to avoid downgrading dependencies, and detecting whether you're using an AMD, Intel, or Nvidia GPU to install the correct OpenCL libraries. The script also sets up the necessary udev rules for USB peripherals like DaVinci Panels and installs all the system icons and MIME files, so it should solve the problems you've encountered.

Here’s how you can try it out:

1. Install Git and Make if they aren’t already installed:

    sudo apt install git make
   

2. Clone the repository:

    git clone https://github.com/leinardi/JDInstaller.git
   

3. Switch to the repository directory:

    cd JDInstaller
   

4. Check out the DaVinci Resolve branch (it’s disabled by default in the main script):

    git checkout davinci
   

5. Run the installation:

    make install TAGS=davinci_resolve

On Ubuntu 22.04, with Nvidia card, I went successfully through installing with MakeResolveDeb, but Resolve was not starting anyway with no apparent error showing in the terminal. I looked in logs and the error was QT lib xcb not loading as described here:

and after installing all QT dev libs it works:

Your script worked for me and very thankful for your efforts! I am able to run resolve but there is a catch. It installs OpenCL version 1.1 for my AMD 6950XT GPU. Version 1.1 is limited and cannot run the raw benchmark or other OpenCL benchmarks without crashing. Is there a way to get the 2.x OpenCL to work for the AMD 6950. Clinfo output:

it really is upsetting that devs of such amazing software doesn;t take into account more broadly used OSs into consideration.
All that would be needed is just to modify their installers to include those few libraries, install them and point them to solely Resolve designated directory and it works on any operating system.

Or they could do a flatpak. Just recently upgraded my OS to a newer LTS release and can't install Davinci Resolve as I used to be able previously. Funny part is, it was not a clean OS install, but an upgrade and Davinci Resolve from previous OS installation still works, so the problem is artificial by the installer it self.
What could be done to convince devs to consider more main stream Linux OS support? I pay for Studio version and prefer to just use it, not solve puzzles how to run it, Rocky Linux is not an option because it brings many more puzzles as other things doesn;t work there without giving headaches. I understand that Rocky Linux is based on enterprise level os, but so are others, and they are not so trouble some to get things going. I wished to try Davinci Resove 20 beta 2, but now am stuck with beta 1. Hopefully workarounds here will help.
