Can't figure out why Resolve rejects this MP4 file

PostMon Jun 17, 2024 9:23 pm

Attached are the details (MediaInfo) of an .mp4 file that Resolve will not open, in the sense that it's invisible in the Media section's file browser and nothing happens when i drag-and-drop it.

Resolve didn't accept the original version (presumably due to its variable frame rate), so i converted it in Handbrake, making sure to select the right codec and constant frame rate; but it also doesn't accept the converted version. I've quintuple checked it against many tutorials and couldn't find a reason for it to be rejected.

The same is true for at least one other video, but they're the only ones i've tested because they're all in the ballpark of 10 hours long and it takes a really long time to convert each one.

I was hoping someone here would point out an obvious issue before i embark on more time-consuming testing (converting with something else than Handbrake, using different settings, transcoding to a mezzanine format, using another computer).

Below are my system specs, and i'm also attaching the diagnostics log just because.

Davinci Resolve 18.6.6 build 7
Windows 10 (up to date)
Processor: i7-7820X CPU @ 3.60GHz
Installed RAM: 32,0 GB (31,7 GB usable)
System type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080

Can you post a link to the clip?

Is this Resolve Studio? There are certain codecs (particularly some H.264 and H.265-based files) that free Resolve will not play, but Resolve Studio will. This especially applies to 10-bit and 12-bit formats. To work around this limitation, you could transcode these to simpler formats (like DnxHR or ProRes) outside of Resolve, then bring the transcodes in. Or you could just pay for Resolve Studio, which is actually pretty cheap and affordable.

It's 8 bit, Marc, so it should open.
@Joe
Post it to a cloud service and give us a link if you want to know for sure.

Thank you for your time!

Uploading it to Google Drive then downloading it again has fixed it. It turns out that the problem was with an almost invisible special character in the title of several video files, or so i think.
I've processed these files with dozens of different softwares and they all ignored this issue, except Resolve.

I am deeply sorry for taking time with what turned out to be a dumb issue, but also the least i can say is that it would be nice if Resolve gave an error message when rejecting a media file.

I have placed a feature request for errors on unsupported codecs, I would ask you to go place your support there too

Yeah, don't do that. There's a whole bunch of characters that are bad to use in file names.

but also the least i can say is that it would be nice if Resolve gave an error message when rejecting a media file.

100% agree. It should say something like, "Illegal character in file name -- cannot import." That's perfectly understandable.
