Built-in camera gyro stabilization vs Gyroflow plugin?

PostTue Jun 18, 2024 7:55 am

I've just experimented with the camera-gyro stabilization feature in resolve for a BRAW recorded on my BMPCC 4K, which I've just upgraded to version 8.1 software.

Initially I thought this required a 3rd party plug-in and found "Gyroflow" (https://gyroflow.xyz), and a video showing how to use it (
).

However, I realized that if you have the gyro data recorded in a BRAW file, that Resolve already has this option under the "Stabilization" section in the Inspector.

The Resolve control is very basic with only a single parameter for "strength" of the effect.

Gyroflow seems quite a bit more complex and the documentation isn't very clear (for me the controls appear in the Color page, not under Fusion or Edit as mentioned elsewhere) and it has a lot more adjustments.

Has anyone played around with both, and is there any advantage to using Gyroflow? The results from the basic Resolve camera gyro stabilization look pretty good to me, but maybe there are cases where Gyroflow would be better?

Thanks!

Well, Gyroflow is very helpful if you use a camera without gyro data or have forgotten to set the focal length in a BM camera for a manual lens. If you need to know more, I can get you an article I wrote about both (in German).
Oh, and the Gyroflow plug-in can be applied in the Edit page, while BM's stabilization is in the Color page only, as you already noticed.

Vielen Dank, Uli! I'll see how much of my German I can remember after living in Stuttgart for a couple of years in the 1990s :D

If footage with gyro data was recorded in BRAW on a Black Magic camera do you think there is any advantage to using Gyroflow in place of the built-in stabilization in Resolve?

I don't think so. The only situation would be the wrong or missing focal length from the camera, since it's not accepted later in DR (for whatever reason).
I'll see where that article is in my archive, you can always get help by DeepL.

Actually BM’s stabilization can be found in the Edit page in the Inspector under Stabilization. When gyro data is present there’s a gyro option in the dropdown.

Thanks for the heads-up.
I didn’t see it when looking for it, obviously since at the time the selected clip had no data.

Yes - that's where I was looking for (and found) it :-)
