I am trying to figure out what video capture device works with Davinci Resolve 19. It doesn't recognize my Elgato devices, nor when I connect a Hyperdeck Studio HD using USB-C to my Windows PC.

Cintel Scanner, Decklink, or UltraStudio.

On the main web site, click on Products at the top, then on Capture and Playback.

Jim and Reynaud, thanks. Hopefully, they will make an update since I notice that my HyperDeck Studio HD Plus and my ATEM Mini Pro ISO shows up as capture devices when I use my MacBook Pro since using the Beta version 19.5.

That might be to support the new Replay feature.

Can you extent this please. I've tried connecting my atem mini pro iso to the computer via ethernet and usb-c and neither way shows up in davinci resolve studio 19.1.4

We opted to avoid Resolve entirely and just do all our capturing in dedicated Blackmagic boxes outside the system. We have both a Hyperdeck Shuttle HD (sadly discontinued) and a Hyperdeck Studio, and they're both stellar: they can record to H.264 or various kinds of ProRes, and do a terrific job. You do need to use a fast SD card (class 10 or better), but once you have that, they're very reliable.

19.5 does not exist. You mean 18.5 or the new 20 beta?

I hope you all will hang with this rookie long enough to fix a problem I've had for years.

I posted on another thread here about capturing older family video tape content via cameras that have the smaller Firewire 400 4-conductor out. Those old 2006 cameras also have an HDMI out.

Solution 1: My first wrong move years ago was buying a Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder with an HDMI in and FW out. I was going to use the included blackmagic software and a PC or Mac, I have both, and keep it gloriously simple. Well, life in got in the way and I never tested anything. It's just as well because I was recently told that setup would not work. To add insult, I had also purchased a TB 2 to TB 3 adapter to go into the TB 4 port of my mac mini.

Solution 2: I bought an old mac mini, solely for the purpose of it's FW input and older OS. I was going to come straight out of the camera to the Mac mini. Then I was told I need to find a copy of FCP 7 and an older Apple only FW cable that is no longer made.

Solution 3: I really don't like solution 2 and so the older Hyperdeck hardware solution above might be the answer I'm looking for.

If so, which hyperdeck should I buy and which output will I use on the hyperdeck. Also, which cable/adapters am I going to need for which of my four computers:

2012 MacMini with TB
2024 MacMini with TB4
Windows 7 PC with firewire card
Windows 11 machine with USB-3.X and USB-C

I would use "Solution 2" as you do not need FCP7 to capture video. Quicktime can do it and BMD Media Express can do it. I can ship you a firewire cable if you want it!

Peter, Did you by chance have a Canon HV camera as well?

If so, you might be able to enlighten me on getting rid of PsF with pulldown either on your settings before you captured or after capturing - maybe in Resolve.

Why do you need to remove the PsF formatting? Not familiar with that camera. Is it MiniDV format?

Yes, it is mini DV. The HV 20 and HV 30 was a break through for prosumers in the mid 2000s with 1080 resolution at 24/25 fps, but it did so with progressive segmented frames in this weird interlaced way with pull down instead of true progressive. It's a confusing mess for non professional production folks who want deinterlaced progressive files. Here's how it's explained:

In 2007 Canon commoditized progressive scanning, releasing the HV20 camcorder. The version for 50 Hz market featured PF25 mode with PsF-like recording, while the version for 60 Hz market had PF24 mode, which utilized 2-3 pulldown scheme. Progressive scan video recorded with the HV20 does not include flags necessary for performing automated film-mode deinterlacing, which is why most editing tools treat such video as interlaced.[23] The HV30, released in 2008, implemented additional PsF-like PF30 mode for 60 Hz markets. Output is performed via component, HDMI and FireWire in interlaced form.[24]

Progressive scan video must be properly deinterlaced to achieve full vertical resolution and to avoid interlace artifacts. 25P and 30P video must be deinterlaced with "weave" or "no deinterlacing" algorithm, which means joining two fields of each frame together into one progressive frame. This operation can be done in most editing tools simply by changing project properties from interlaced to progressive. 24P video must go through film-mode deinterlacing also known as inverse telecine, which throws out judder frames and restores original 24-frame/s progressive video. Many editing tools cannot perform film-mode deinterlacing, requiring usage of a separate converter.
