DaVinci Resolve crashing right after start.

PostSun Sep 08, 2024 9:11 am

Today i tried to start DaVinci_Resolve_18.6.4_Windows
The splashscreen comes up telling me to load something and it crashed.
I haven´t used DaVinci Resolve for some weeks now and tried to start it today.

After that i downloaded DaVinci_Resolve_19.0.1_Windows and installed it...it crashes also.
There was a windows update that wasn´t run so i run it:
2024-08 Kumulatives Update für Windows 11 Version 23H2 für x64-basierte Systeme (KB5041587)

DaVinci Resole is still crashing.
After that i deinstalled and reinstalled both versions several times with rebooting between each sttep...also started the installer with rightclick run as an administrator...also with disabling "Kaspersky Premium"-VirusScanner ...still crashing

I did an refresh/repair Installation of Windows 11 that took about 45minutes.

Reinstalled DaVinci Resole 19.0.1 still crashing right after start.

Do remember this is a user forum not a direct link to Blackmagic. For the free version help is provided by users though staff like Dwaine Maggart and Peter Chamberlain do come on here to help.
Does your computer meet the minimum requirements for running Resolve 19.01? These are for both the free and Studio versions.

Try uninstalling the game driver and install the studio driver for your gfx card.
Also it seems your Topaz Video auth token is no longer valid.

As I’m no windows user I only briefly looked at your logs - for what’s it’s worth.

I already tried the last Studio Driver and also installed several older Game Drivers down to the oldest available.

Also done this:
Resolve 18/19 Clean Windows Uninstall/Install with User Data Preservation

Today i installed the last recent Version of the Topaz Video AI(owned license) Plugin for Resolve.

No change still crashing...Resolve.exe remains in the Task Manager after sending the crash report...needs to be manually stopped every time after the crash.

About 6 months ago DaVinci Resolve worked without any problem here.
That´s why i already tested those other GFX Drivers
I also deinstalled my Kaspersky Virus-Scanner without any change...

Resolve 19 requires driver version Studio 550.58 or newer to be able to use CUDA 12. Also something that might be an issue, if you are not using any Blackmagic panels, go to Control Panel/Programs and Features and uninstall DaVinci Resolve Control Panels. See if that makes a difference.

"Video Plugins Loading" is the latest the Splashscreen is showing until DaVinci Resolve is crashing.

- Deinstalled BlackMagic DaVinci Resolve Control Panels

- Installed NVIDIA Studio Driver 561.09 as NEW Installation(not keeping any old settings)

So no difference...

Do I get this right?
So it worked a year ago without Topaz?
It worked in January without Topaz?

But it does not work now with Topaz?
Have you changed anything else - hardware or software - between January and now?

If you fully uninstall Topaz - and then attach the new logs after that.

I am using Topaz before DaVinci all the time for some years now.
And Topaz itself is working.

There´s no option to uninstall the Topaz Plugin out of DaVinci and i don´t know what to do to remove it from there. There´s only an option to install the plugin. But i think that the complete removal of DaVinci
with this:
- Resolve 18/19 Clean Windows Uninstall/Install with User Data Preservation
should have removed also all traces from the Topaz-Plugin for DaVinci. I just installed recently the last version of the Topaz plugin to be sure that it´s not maybe that.

Would be nice if someone was able to figure out what the logs say about the problem.

I didn´t had any big change in my system just not used DaVinci Resolve since Januar.
Then i wanted to do something with DaVinci and it crashed from then on...updating to the latest version didn´t help. Also reverting back to the last version that worked before leads also to crash always.

The system at all is running very stable and doesn´t use overclocking.
It worked in January also with Topaz and there was no change in hardware/software.

Problem solved. DaVinci Resolve is starting again.

Both sides TopazVideoAI and also DaVinciResolve doesn´t have an option to remove 3rd Party Plugins.

- Topaz VideoAI: New Installations of plugins when changing between Alpha to Beta or Release don´t remove those older Plugins. There´s no option to remove them at all.

- DaVinciResolve: No option to disable or remove 3rd Party Plugins at startup, no message what issue(or which plugin) leads to a crash. Also no option at deinstallation to remove single 3rd Party Plugins. No option to remove really all traces of DaVinci Resolve or an option to Backup User Settings and Project Files. That all needs to be done by hand reading a lot on the forum.

There´s also missing an option to save project files in a way a previous version is able to read them.

And yes also this Resolve.exe that remains should be terminated or maybe as an option when a new DaVinci Resolve is starting and sees that there´s something crashed still working in the background.
The crash reporter should also terminate those resolve.exe when closing...
And a hint that leaving the e-Mail address and what you have done before is (maybe, but it seems so) just landing in the dustbin without any notice or response would be nice also. No one after one month contacted me after using the crash reporter. So why leaving the e-Mail address or reporting at all ?

Also when loading plugins the Splashscreen should say "Loading Plugin....xyz" with the name of the plugin. So each user can see itself which Plugin is causing the crash.

SOLUTION quick workaround fix:

If Resolve is crashing during launch, then in a File Explorer window, navigate to this folder:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\OFX

Rename the Plugins folder to Plugins.tmp

This will prevent Resolve from loading 3rd party OFX plugins and will hopefully allow Resolve to launch.

Great to hear you found the cause and posted on how to solve it for any others that suffers from the same.

This is the first result of Google when searching for "Davinci resolve crash on launch".

If you're using CLOUDFLARE WARP, DISABLE it. That's 100% the issue.

Just like the previous poster, I also immediately fixed the DaVinci startup crashes the instant I disabled my VPN.

Same! Disabled NordVPN and no Resolve crashing on startup. Posting here for visibility.

Edit: I take that back. That seemed to work the first time, but perhaps just concidence. Still can't load Resolve. Was working fine up until earlier today.

For those who have the issue of Resolve crashing on launch because of a VPN, uninstall "DaVinci Control Panels" (should be right under DaVinci Resolve in the "Add or Remove Programs" menu on Windows). Without that software I've been able to consistently launch and use Resolve without disabling my VPN.

Thanks Nufreja!

Renaming the Plugins folder to Plugins.tmp solved my problem, at least for now.

This, for me anyway, is related to Topaz. It is a current topic on their board. I renamed the plugin folder as suggested here and all works now.

+1 here. More specifically the issue was with "Topaz Video AI.ofx.bundle". On the last successful running of Resolve, I opened Topaz AI in the background and then proceeded to update the standalone app. This must have tried to also update the plug-ins, creating some loading error that followed.

Remove that folder inside OFX (with Admin) and Resolve opens again.
