DaVinci Resolve failed to initialize OpenGL

PostMon Oct 14, 2024 7:24 pm

Hi,
I've downlod and install Resole v19.02. I've have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER card.

Launching Resolve i've got the following error message (translate from french language) :
GPU initialization failed
DaVinci Resolve failed to initialize OpenGL. Check that the most recent graphics players are installed.

I've checked the pilot version. I changed the graphics preferences of the Resolve application from "let windows decide" to "high performance".
The problem persists after restarting the PC and launching Resolve ;)

I installed the trial version of MovAvi and have no problems. I would like to be able to test version 19 of Resolve before choosing the editing software that I would definitely install. Can you help me please ?
Thank you.
Bob.

Using OpenGL with an Nvidia card is wrong.
Get CUDA and the most recent driver for your card, directly from the manufacturer.

OpenCL is the alternate NVIDIA processing option. OpenGL is yet another thing.

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows Desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open the Windows System Information app and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Place both those files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files here. Make sure the links don't require access credentials.

If you are a new Forum user, you may not be allowed to post URLs. If this happens, just put a space near the front of the URL, so the system doesn't think it's a URL.

Ah, OK. But wouldn't that be awfully slow?

OpenGL is not user selected. It's a background thing.

General thing that can cause OpenGL issues is with systems that have both NVIDIA and Intel GPUs, and the Intel GPU is disabled in Device Manager.

But other things could also cause OpenGL issues.

Updating the NVIDIA driver is certainly a good thing, but not likely causing an OpenGL issue. An old NVIDIA driver would, however, generate an OpenCL error. If the OP reported that incorrectly, that might be the only issue.

But, logs and NFO should tell the tale, if updating the NVIDIA driver doesn't help.

Just to clarify, you don't need to install ANYTHING CUDA related. Just update the NVDIA driver to the current 565.90 STUDIO driver for your GTX 1660 card. When you run the driver installer, select the Custom option, then the Clean Install option.

Again, don't install any CUDA specific stuff. Just the driver.

Hello everyone!
I have a similar problem. DR won't start

The driver is the latest one. I tried to install older ones, tried a "clean" installation, nothing helps
I also tried an earlier version of DR - it doesn't help...
I tried all the advice from the internet, I'm in a panic (((

Hello!

My computer runs on Intel core i5, Intel® HD Graphics 4000. I've got this message when I try to start DaVinci Resolve: GPU Initialization Failed
DaVinci Resolve could not initialize OpenGl. Please ensure that the latest graphics drives are installed.

I checked it, the driver is installed. Please, what else can I do?

Good evening,

I have also the same issue with running Davinci Resolve 19. My graphic card is AMD Radeon (TM) R7 M370. I am also attaching log files here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing.

Could you please check, where could be the issue? I have the newest driver too.

Thank you.

@Petr: Because the NFO is in Czech, it's a bit tricky for me to interpret. But it appears you may have the Intel iGPU disabled in Device Manager - Display Adapters. And it's using the default Microsoft display adapter, which is not providing the required OpenCL support.

If this is the issue, you must not disable the Intel display adapter.

@Gilmar: We need a Resolve diagnostics log and Windows NFO file:

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows Desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open the Windows System Information app and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Resolve 16.2.8 is the last version that works with your Intel HD4000 iGPU.

If you'd like to use that, it's available on the BMD Support page for Resolve:

Hi I'm on a similar situation but with an MSI computer with 4060 Graphic card and intel i7: MSI Katana 17 B13VFK-818XES Intel Core i7-13700H/32GB/1TB SSD/RTX 4060. is not the latest but it's not a really old Graphic card and I'm unable to start the DR with the same GPU initialization Failed due cannot open Open GL. I have save the requested files to see if anyone can help me. I have seen at least 5 videos about how to fix the common issues with this, keeping all the drivers updates and System settings and it did not work with the last 19 version and neither with the 18.4. testing an older version. don't know which door to knock, let's see if anyone can help me! thanks in advance

I don't pretend to be Dwaine, but looking at your log, I see
Actual OpenGL version 1.1 < Minimum OpenGL version 4.5
and
NVIDIA GPU Driver: 528.92, supports CUDA 12.0

Looks like an old driver problem. Requirements for version 20 are NVIDIA Studio driver 570.65 or newer, and CUDA 12.8 support.
As a general rule, you want the latest driver for your card from the card manufacturer, not the one provided with your operating system.

It appears you may have the Iris XE Intel iGPU disabled in Device Manager. If so, you can't do that. Enable that iGPU, and then see what happens. If there are still Resolve issues, please send a new Resolve log and NFO after enabling the Iris XE graphics.

Just to try all the tests you kindly wrote me. How can I update the drivers: NVIDIA Studio driver 570.65 or newer, and CUDA 12.8 support.

And be sure that I am installing the right version of the driver? I downloaded (in one of my attempts) the last driver for the 4060 from Nvidia and didn’t work. BTW what is exactly CUDA and how and where should I get those drivers for install them?
Here in Europe it is late now so will test all these things tomorrow morning

Your NVIDIA driver is fine.

What's NOT fine is that your Intel i7-13700H CPU's internal Iris XE GPU is disabled. As mentioned, you can't do that.

Open Windows Device Manager, and select Display Adapters. You should see the NVIDIA 4060 and another adapter. If that other adapter is disabled, as it appears to be, you need to Enable it.

Dwaine you nailed it! It was just exactly what you said. Actually I was unable to modify the screen luminosity neither adjusting other screen settings. But after activating the Iris XE GPU everything works fine now. Couldn’t be more happy with the happy end of the issues.

PLEASE HELP!

Hello. I have this same problem. I read the forum thread and I still can't get it up, so to speak.

I just installed DVR (Davinci Resolve) 19, free version before I pay $. It will NOT open. Error displays GPU Initialization Failed

Laptop:
Windows 10 PRO -
Intel Core i7 10875H, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super with Max-Q Design
64 Gigs Ram -
1TB SSD

This is what I've done:
1)Downloaded the latest NVIDIA driver for the card ( V. 576.52)

2)In Windows 10 Graphics Settings - Graphics performance preference. I set DVR to High Performance. (I took it out of LET WINDOWS DECIDE)

3)Changed the power plan to High Performance

NOTHING - Did it again - NOTHING

Then, I downloaded and installed DVR 18
Installed the latest driver, then the next latest driver, then the next to the next latest driver (V 576.52, 576.02, 572.83)

NOTHING.

I saved DaVinci Resolve logs in ZIP form
and saved sys info as an .NFO file.

What do I do?

Rocky Linux 8.10 - Same issue since this morning.
nvidia-smi sees CUDA and my GPU but now I have the failed to initialize OpenGL error. I am up to date on NVIDIA using dnf. I uninstalled Reslve 20 and reinstalled Resolve 19, but have the same error.
I run other apps like ComyUI and they all see the NVIDIA card / CUDA without issue.

All looks good on the OS side. Any ideas what might be wrong?

What version of CUDA? Resolve is a bit fussy about that.

OpenGL is the low-level part of the graphics driver that draws pixels on the screen. Failure there suggests something fundamentally wrong. Is Wayland involved?

The Intel UHD Graphics iGPU that is part of your CPU, appears to be disabled, and is presenting itself as a Microsoft Basic Display adapter, and that's causing the issue.

The most likely cause of this would be if the Intel UHD graphics display adapter has been disabled in Device Manager.

So, first thing to try is open the Windows Device Manager, and select Display Adapters. You should see 2 things there: the NVIDIA RTX 2070 adapter, and something else. Is that something else Disabled? If so, enable it, and hopefully it appears as Intel UHD Graphics. And if that happens, Resolve should then work.

Let us know what you find.
