Dual Monitor operation

DaVinci Resolve (Free version)

Just starting to learn DaVinci and I have pc monitor and ext monitor operating as dual monitors … duplicate display.
However, in Edit mode/Workspace/Dual Screen … On is greyed out even though 2nd monitor is connected OK. How to fix?
If I select Extend to 2nd monitor this monitor is showing my Home screen (normal operation) ... how can I display eg the video in this screen? Is there a drag facility incorporated in DaVinci from monitor 1?

Hi there,
If you want to set up dual monitors in DaVinci Resolve, first ensure that your second monitor is properly connected and recognized by your computer. Go to Workspace in the top menu and try to enable Dual Screen; if it's greyed out, restart Resolve after checking your monitor settings.

If you're using an extended display, you can drag the video viewer or timeline window to the second monitor, allowing for better workspace organization. Additionally, you can use the Video Clean Feed feature to show a full-screen preview of your video on the second monitor, providing a more efficient editing experience.

Thanks for fast response.
I often use 2nd monitor and I can confirm that it is correctly connected. Restarting DaVinci does not change On to 'On' ... it stays greyed out? No 'drag' facility as best I can judge.

I am using the latest AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS with a separate graphics card so no problem handling this programme,

Indeed, the first step is for
Workspace > Dual Screen > On
to be available (not grayed)

Worth checking if Resolve uses the right GPU

By the way, the Video Clean Feed feature is only available in the Studio (paid) version.

I'm using the free version myself, and I have the timeline on the other screen, which is very handy.

cheers,
Dorin

Well, after a number of 'start ups' the dual screen option is now functioning ... I will check GPU's, though maybe its best for the program to decide which to choose.

Thanks all for taking time out to assist.

Since updating to version 19.1 (free) the dual monitor Workspace/Dual Screen is greyed out again ... even though the external monitor is correctly connected with normal functioning.

I have checked settings of graphics and all appears correct ... the NVidia kicks in when needed. Also restarted pc & Da Vinci numerous times with no solution. So, I cannot have different screens between pc and ext monitor using DaVinci but other programs in my pc permit this function.

Anything else I can check?

How are your monitors connected? If your computer is a desktop with a discrete GPU, both monitors should be connected to it alone, and not to both the discrete GPU and the computers display output. Which screen is Primary or Secondary in Resolve you set up in the Workspace menu.
I'm running 3 monitors from my GPU, 2 for the UI and 1 for Video Clean Feed. As I have an Nvidia GPU this is how they are set up. The Eizo is the Clean Feed monitor.

In Resolve the Primary and Secondary are set to show the UI.

These settings are always remembered and Resolve always opens this layout.

Thanks Charles,
My setup is much less than yours but adequate for purpose. Comprising a current model Lenovo Yoga R7 laptop with additional NVidia GPU 3050. Set up easily copes with HD editing and producing. Connected via HDMI is a 23" monitor.

I will further investigate because I have had this setup working previously before 19.1.
Cheers Ron

Finally after a lot of restarts of program and laptop/ext monitor I have managed to set up two independent screens :) Very pleased about that but I have no idea how this was solved!

Seems the solution is to ensure you are not in the Cut page ...

Hi

I too am experiencing this problem. I have the free version only as I am (to this point) very much a newbie and what's on offer in the paid version is way above my pay grade so to speak however, I have bought a Speed Editor and in doing so I was hoping to be able to use both the cut and edit pages. However, whilst this all worked well in previous versions where I could access the Dual Screen mode in both, the Dual Screen is now greyed out in the Cut page and although it is accessible in the Edit page, when I then try to view B roll in the preview window I have to leave the cursor over the thumbnail otherwise it disappears from the Preview screen. I can't really afford to buy the full version at this stage just for that one small area of access.

Has anyone a solution to this.

Many thanks.

The Cut page has always only used a single screen which is why Dual Screen is greyed out. The clip showing in the Source viewer when you put the curser on it is turned on and off here.

To place the clip in the Source viewer without Live Media Preview turned on, double click on it. You don't need the Studio version for this.
I don't use the Cut page at all as I prefer the Edit page where the Speed Editor works fine as well. As I have the Studio version I run three monitors, two for the UI and one for Video Clean Feed. Recently I've started to use the Full Screen Timeline mode more as it gives a lot more real estate for the timeline.

Hi Charles - not sure whether or not this system notifies you of my reply but assuming it does, firstly a very big thank you for your advice.

I have been slow in replying for various reasons that have kept me away from the editor but am back now hoping to build on my knowledge.

I have read the advice you gave and it has been very useful, I have even tried the full page timeline which I can clearly see the benefits of but my screen layout (three in a row with one not being as yet seeming to be part of the Davinci operation) doesn't so nicely lend itself to having that large timeline but I'm sure I could make it work eventually.

The principle of editing is not new to me, I used to work in tv 30 years ago however, I left just as the linear editing world was getting going so its this that is the biggest learning curve, not the principle of it (that's easier than tape) but the myriad of options at every stage.

Anyway the advice you have given me address what I was querying although, I did have the dual screen with facility in the cut page in various pre 19 versions, it has only just cease once I accepted the most recent couple of downloads.

Hey ho, for the speed I work at the edit page will do.

Thanks

Martin

Hi guys, sorry to open an older link - not sure if anyone else has this issue but I have lost my dual screen since the Beta 20.0 version update. I mean it shows up in my menu but doesn't open up with I click "Dual Screen > On"
I also have a UI preset for Dual screen I use and it also does nothing when I select it now

Any thoughts?????

Yikes me two (sort of)
Needed to reinstalled v 19.4. Had the second monitor set up to preview the timeline, (loved it). After the reinstall I only get a bunch of 'tools' on the second monitor from the normal GUI, depending on which "page" i am on.

I'm still learning Resolve and need help getting back to the same setup as before!! please
Q. Is there a config file that I should have saved from the previous working setup?
cheers CD

UPDATE - sorry forgot to mention I'm on the free resolve only, BUT it was working for me before the reinstall. The clean video feed does not appear in the workspace menu.

Clive, Video Clean Feed is Studio version only. If you use the full screen Cinema viewer, Ctrl+F, it always appears over the Timeline, except in the Fairlight page. The Cut and Deliver pages are single screen only.
Have you set up your Primary and Secondary screens in the Workspace menu? Also, if you are using a PC with a discrete GPU both monitors should be plugged into it and not one in the GPU and the other in the onboard graphics port.
Pics show what you should be seeing. As far as I'm aware there is no difference between the Free and Studio version UI. I have omitted displaying the Fusion page. My Primary screen is set to the right hand screen. If yours is not like any of these, post a picture as an attachment.

Hi there Charles, thanks for your prompt responce.
Yes, I didn't recall seeing the 'clean video feed' in the free version before, just thought I should mention that in my original post.
But, if you asked me whether I had a full screen option of the preview monitor on the seconn monitor before today, I would have said yes. Perhaps I was dreaming or perhaps confusing Vegas Pro or ???
I am getting forgetful in my old age.
Anyway thanks for the confirmation.
Cheers CD

Hi Clive
In dual screen setup, you can enable Workspace > Dual Screen > Full Screen Timeline and Workspace > Viewer Mode > Cinema Viewer... that will get you your timeline on your primary display and a full screen preview on the secondary display... but bear in mind that many keyboard shortcuts will not work in the mode.
Cheers
