Macbook Pro for DaVinci Resolve Studio 19

PostThu Nov 21, 2024 5:51 pm

Hello, I'm thinking of buying a Macbook Pro for video editing, mainly 4K (4096x2160), this Black Friday. I want to get started with DaVinci Resolve Studio, so far I have been using mostly Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro for editing. I have looked at the Minimum System Requirements for macOS:

viewtopic.php?f=21&t=211521

Minimum System Requirements for macOS

• macOS 13 Ventura or later.
• 8 GB of system memory or 16 GB when using Fusion.
• For monitoring, Blackmagic Design Desktop Video 12.9 or later.
• Apple Silicon based computer or GPU which supports Metal
.

How can I find out if the MacBook Pro I am going to buy has this?:

Apple Silicon based computer or Metal compatible GPU.

On the other hand, what would be the most important thing to choose? RAM, CPU, GPU? I mean, should I prioritise RAM over CPU/GPU? Is more RAM and a Macbook Pro M3 chip better than a Macbook Pro M4 chip with less RAM?

All MacBook Pro M4 are 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. Is it enough or would it be better to buy an M4 Pro? The maximum with M4 Pro is 14-core CPU and 20-core GPU. I was almost decided for the M4 Pro 12-core CPU and 16-core GPU. But I don't want to buy something too expensive if with less I have enough to use DaVinci Resolve Studio 19 without any problem.

Thanks in advance.

I would max out the RAM if you possibly can. I would at least try to go with 48GB of RAM if not 64GB. The M4 Max CPUs are very good these days.

Thank you very much. So, with 24GB of RAM I will never have enough to use DaVince Resolve 19.1?

Unfortunately, I can't afford the M4 Max unless I get an unexpected offer on Black Friday. I was thinking of buying an M4 Pro 12-core CPU and 16-core GPU. Wouldn't that be enough either? The maximum with M4 Pro is 14-core CPU and 20-core GPU. I don't know if the difference is worth it.

And just three more things:

1-Is 1 TB SSD enough?
2-Is 14" enough or should I go for a 16" Macbook Pro?
3-What does this mean?: “For monitoring, Blackmagic Design Desktop Video 12.9 or later.” Is this only if I'm going to use more than one screen for editing? I have always used only one.

Finally, I am right now decided on one of these two:

M4 Pro, 14-core CPU, 20-core GPU, 48 RAM

M4 Max, 14-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 36 RAM

Which of these two would you choose?

The first one. Not having enough RAM for so many GPU cores will ruin your internal SSD in the long run.
1. Even half a TB is enough for system, DR and Library. And even 2 TB is never enough for all your video clips. External storage is far cheaper and fast enough.
2. Go for 16“ or you’ll get thermal throttling.
Great sound too, and if you don't use an external screen, you'll need the size for DR.
3. You don't need that if you don't have an I/O device by BM.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Studio 19.1.3
MacOS 13.7.4, 2017 iMac, 32 GB, Radeon Pro 580 + eGPU
MacBook M1 Pro, 16 GPU cores, 32 GB RAM, MacOS 14.7.2
SE, USM G3
