Micro Color Panel - is it good?

PostFri Nov 22, 2024 5:53 am

Blackmagicdesign announced 20% sale for things, including Micro Color Panel.
I have already Speed Editor and it's very cool, but I can't configure any keys there, so I assume Micro Color Panel has same feature.
But my question is, do you use Micro Color Panel on color page, or is it collecting dust?

I have the Speed Editor as well as the Micro Colour Panel. It is excellent. A massive time saver if you do much color grading. Obviously it is only for the color page, but absolutely worth the investment.

The best thing about using a panel for color grading is that you can adjust two knobs at once, which is mandatory for working quickly. You can't do that with a mouse.

I've done entire feature films going back to 2010 with some pretty rinky-dink panels, and was all doable to a point. With the small panels, it helps to use an accessory macro keyboard like a Streamdeck or XKeys, just to access the modes not available on the color control panel. This was a huge problem with the early panels like the original Tangent Wave and the Avid Artist Color, which were fairly limited (and those cost upwards of $1200 back in the day). The Micro is an absolute bargain even at $495 (now about $400 on sale).

Such a great point. It is hard to overestimate the difference this makes.

I really like adjusting lift gamma and gain with the wheels much better than with the mouse. Trackballs are nice too. For most everything else I still use the keyboard shortcuts and mouse. Especially the shift functions are quite difficult to memorize if you don't use it daily.

I'd say if you are doing color correction a few days in a week and/or have long form projects you're going to feel the difference and I recommend it.

I picked one up a couple of weeks ago and can already tell the difference. You can stop looking at what you're hands are doing and just look at the monitor. Two handing it makes for quick work.

The only thing I didn't like was the inability to access the HDR wheels from the board. Everything still works when your in it but getting to the wheels can't be done without using a mouse. However, I used an old Kindle fire with Touch Portal to make a mini panel that I mapped new buttons to for HDR access and moving up and down the wheel levels. I'm sure I'll load it up with more buttons in the future but so far it's the only glaringly obvious thing missing. Maybe some way to access the curves but so far that's a mouse centric thing for me.
