Can't Export Audio Stems With Reverb

PostTue Nov 26, 2024 8:17 pm

Greetings!

In my edits I always add a few tracks with reverb applied at the track level via Fairlight. This allows the reverberation to extend beyond the length of a given clip.

When I do normal QuickTime exports the reverb is part of the mix and everything sounds fine. If I export the audio as a single file the reverb is baked in and things sound like they should.

But when I export stems for the mixer (outputting all timeline tracks, one track per channel) the reverb gets removed. They have to manually recreate it on their end. It's a hassle for them and leads to things sometimes not sounding right.

Am I doing something wrong? Why does the reverb get baked into the audio sometimes, but not all the time?

Perhaps its related to "render timeline effects" option in the video section of the deliver page. Even if you choose audio only, I think the option in the video section will be there. You can choose whether any timeline-based effects are either ignored or “baked into” the individual clips by checking/unchecking the Render Timeline Effects box. Try, that and see if it changes to what you need.

I'm not actually seeing that option anywhere in 19.1.

The other odd thing is that I'm using the auto-ducking feature on one of the music tracks, and that track retains the ducking. So it's not just wholesale ignoring track-level effects. I don't know if it's just reverb, I haven't tried it with other Fairlight effects.

And I get why one might want to disable that kind of thing when exporting for a mix. But I don't know why that should be the default behavior, and in our workflow it'd be better if the effects were retained.

I am not sure that ducking is considered FX per se, since its part of the audio inspector section, so maybe its treated as a different thing. Effects have their own tab.

The "Render Timeline Effects" should be here.

If for some reason that is not there for you or is not working, you should be able to export tracks individually from fairlight page as well. Just make sure you check the FX. Right click on audio clip in fairlight and choose; Export Audio Files...

Only Clip effects are included in the Export Audio Files function, Track Inserts will not be included.

Likewise, Render Timeline effects does not apply to Inserts.

Track Inserts are not included as the feed is pre-Fairlight Mixer with the All Timeline Tracks option selected.

Instantiate the plugin as a Clip effect with the bounce tail option enabled prior to bouncing or exporting files. Alternatively, print the Reverb to a new Timeline Track prior to outputting deliverables or use Busses as Output Tracks.

Very helpful replies from everyone, thanks

I do stand by my original gut reaction that it's weird that the effect will be there when you make a movie, but not when you export audio only. And that it should be an option to enable or disable that kind of effect when exporting audio.
