Will an external sound card speed up audio processing?

PostWed Nov 27, 2024 6:16 am

If I buy an external sound card, will this speed up the processing of sound effects? Voice Isolation and others?

Since periodically when playing it starts to stutter. Although the processor is not loaded and neither is the disk. Or the sound disappears and then appears. You have to disable the effects and reconnect them.

The sound card will be for audio IO only and will not accelerate Resolve or Fairlight.

For the intrinsic effects like Voice Isolation or Dialog Leveler, I find it best to Cache Audio before continuing to work.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I bought the focusrite 4i4 external sound card to remove crackling during playback, and lag when recording audio in resolve. It worked a treat for lag, but I still get lots of issues with crackly audio even though my machine is an absolute beast.

It's strange, because whenever resolve is open in asio mode with the external sound card selected, all apps on my computer start to get audio artefacts (vlc, browsers, etc). Closing Resolve resolves immediately. Honestly I don't have a clue what resolve is doing to audio. I have the buffer set to 500 and the sample rate is 48000khz.

Other audio software I use, such as ableton live, doesn't have any of these issues. It seems to be an extremely common complaint. I find it perplexing.

Depending on the DSP in circuit you may have to increase the block size for improved performance.
