Color Stabilization effect not having any effect

PostWed Nov 27, 2024 11:12 pm

I am running DR Studio, Version 18.6.6 Build 7 on an Apple M2 Max (Sonoma 14.6.1).

Today I attempted to use the Color Stabilization effect for the first time. My procedure is exactly per the manual and the YouTube tutorials I have seen, but the app doesn't seem to have any effect.

I have added a Serial Node.
I have selected Color Stabilization and dragged it to the new node.
For Region of Analysis, I have selected Entire Frame.
After clicking on Live Region Analysis, I choose Balance, Brightness and leave Stabilize White Balance and Stabilize Brightness checked.
I am wanting to stabilize Levels and Contrast.

I find the frame in the clip that I want to analyze, and then I click on Live Region Analysis.

When I play through the clip, nothing seems to have changed.

I feel like I am either leaving out a step or putting things in the wrong order, but I have been doing what the manual and tutorials say. What am I missing?

Thanks for any insights you can offer.

Do you have all these overlays and options turned on?

Yes. Although I am wanting to fix the entire frame, not just a selected area. So there is no box over my image.

I do notice that the button "Live Region Analysis" does not stay illuminated when I click on it. Should it be staying "on"?

I don't think so. I think it is highlighted when you hover mouse over it to indicate clickable button. I don't know what you are seeing or not seeing, so I can't say if its something you missed or something else. Have you tried applying the effect only on a specific region? What do you see?

It does seem to have some effect when I work on the entire frame as the selected area. Not perfect, but an improvement. I'll take it.

Sure wish I could just select the entire frame without having to stretch the selection area. Something doesn't seem to be working.

Thanks so much!

Maybe test it on other clips. I don't know what you are seeing, maybe the changes are minimal because they don't have to be. Give it some real tests with more obvious problems and monitor the results. It should work. Its not magic of course, but it can save the shot if you use it correctly.

I have rarely been able to get Color Stabilzation to work the way I want it. Generally, what I've had to do is attack the shot with manual keyframes and then, after the fact, some DeFlicker on specific color channels (Red-only or Green-only or frequently Blue-only). Generally, that can undo some of the damage. A lot depends on the specifics of the scene.
