Why are assets so poorly scaled?

Hi,

I created a small motiongraphics clip (with alpha channel) in AE and rendered it at 1080x1920. I need to use this clip in two sizes and also different timeline resolutions.

It seems like whenever I resize the clip (or when it is resized by the Mismatched Resolution settings), the rendering is super poor (see: image attached). Also tried different codecs.

If I would reimport the rendered clip into AE and scale it down, there's nothing like this happening, everything looks fine. Same in PrPro. Is it really just Resolve which can't handle downscaling motiongraphic clips? Or am I overlooking something?

I tried to change the datalevel in the Clip Settings. It helped for DNxHR and ProRes encoded clips, but the colors are off.

Is there any solution? Cannot be possible that every other NLE and every videoplayer is able to handle downscaling, but DR is not?

Would be great if somebody has an answer to this, thank you! :-)

Is your problem the super thin black outline? Is there a black outline in your design or not?
For an outsider this is not so obvious as you might think - because only you know what it should look like.

What should it look like? Can you also post a version of it you got in After Effects scaled?

That would make it easier to asses what is going on here.

Thanks for your fast reply. You're absolutely right. Without comparision it's hard to get help. I attached the rendering directly out of AE. This is how it should look like:

Also a screenshot when I re-import the rendered clip into AE and scale it to 70%:

As you can see, the edges are smooth and clean. No strange black outlines or "double-edges". In AE I can also scale down to eg. 30% and it's still clean. :-)

Ah, I see.

Try the following:

When rendering out from After Effects make sure the Alpha channel option is set to "Direkt (ohne Maske)".
If that still shows black edge pixels in Resolve, try changing the Alpha channel settings in the clip attributes.

You could also choose other scaling algorithms in Resolve - try Catmull-Rom or Sinc for example.

Oh, yes. Thanks a lot!

I played around with the scaling options in Resolve (Project Settings > Image Scaling) and the "Resize filter" was set to "Sharpen", which caused the artifacts. Setting it to "Smoother" delivered the best rendering for my usecase.

Really appreciate your help! :-)
