Da vinci resolve very very slow and lagging

PostTue Feb 11, 2025 3:48 am

Hello, I have a serious problem of slowness and lag on the timeline when I move from one part of the timeline to another and when I play my project. Worse when I use the color tab.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the Ndvidia 572.16 drivers. I followed all the recommendations, Playback timeline half, ect, Task Manager Priority is normal.

The problem is since the installation of version 19.1.3 build 7. I uninstalled and reinstalled several times.

You had a great product that I really trusted. I wasted 3 days trying to repair the system without success and this has huge repercussions on the deliverables of my projects.

Peter - it seems there is no 550.58 studio driver version?

Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

I am fairly new to resolve (as in ive used the free version for a few years but only for basic editing, learning studio as we go) but I also have occasional poor performance in resolve and my spec is similar to yours:

Graphics: RTX4060Ti
RAM: 33gb
CPU: 3600
Hard disk: 1TB NVME for OS and applications, 1TB HD for files and storage

I'm not sure your experience with resolve, probably much higher than mine but I've done some bottleneck testing and it's almost certainly the HD causing timeline playback issues, I do need to build a optimised system (better cpu, graphics, ram and storage capacity ideally NVME for file storage as well) but for now considering replacing the file HD with a sata disk as a stopgap.

Don't want to teach a granny to suck eggs but noticed you've some mechanical disks on your spec list.

What source media are you using and where is it stored? Where is the cache? What are your timeline settings? Etc. I'm with Kristian, this could plausibly be a storage related bottle neck.

Hello Kristian, thanks for your fast answer.
- i use .mp4 and .mov media (all 29,97 fps)
- storage Hard Disk 3 WD easystore 264D USB Device (8,0 TB) available on disk 5,22 To
- storage Hard Disk LaCie (portable and backup) USB Device (2,0 TB) available on disk 1,32 To

- Cache Settings
I use d: drive
- Media folder d:\FilmBanff\production
- Proxy generation location d:\Film Banff\ProxyMedia
- Cache files location d:\Film Banff\CacheClip
- Gallery stills location d:\Film Banff\gallery

Timeline Settings
- Timeline Resolution 1920 X 1080 HD
- Pixel Aspect Ratio square (but should be 16:9)
- Timeline Framerate 29,97 fps
- Use Project Settings (enable)

I transferred my project to my laptop
ASUS Rog Strix AMD Ryzen 7
Memory 16 GB
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050
using the same Lacie disk. I'm using DaVinci Resolve 19.0.1 build 6 and everything works perfectly. However, I need to work with my desktop computer.

I also tried the same LaCie drive on the desktop computer and no results. The slowness increases as soon as I work with the color tab. otherwise the Timeline freezes and shifts.

Many thabks for helping me, it's appreciated.

I've been using nVidia's GeForce Experience to keep my driver updated for a long time now, and it has never caused any issues with either Adobe or Blackmagic software.

GeForce Experience was recently replaced with the nVidia App, but it's just as capable for driver updates. Give that a try, Ray.

For Resolve, use nVidia's "Studio" driver. (Even for the "Free" version of Resolve. ;) )
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

If your D drive is one of those HDDs then try redirecting the cache to the system drive and see if that helps... if so, consider adding a dedicated fast SSD to your system to use as the cache drive.
