New Beta R3D SDK fixed Nikon NRAW decoding issue in Resolve

PostThu Feb 13, 2025 8:07 am

https://www.red.com/download/r3d-sdk-beta

I'm excited about the new R3D SDK Beta with Nikon NRAW support. As both a Nikon and BMD user, I've noticed that DaVinci Resolve has been exhibiting a blue oversaturation issue when decoding NRAW NEV files—possibly due to the Nikon-provided decoding libraries. It appears that the new R3D SDK has resolved this issue.

I’m also curious whether Resolve might adopt this improved decoding process. In my tests, REDCINE‑X PRO still seems to lack lens distortion correction when converting NEV files to ProRes or DNxHR, whereas Resolve handles lens distortion properly.

Any insights or feedback on these points would be greatly appreciated.

Adobe PR team announced that they will implement NRAW support using SDK provided by RED. I am wondering if BMD would also update the SDK to fix NRAW decoding problems. Furthermore, as a Mac/Linux user, I hope there will also be a Linux based SDK so that I can render videos on the Linux server.

Maybe I’ve missed something but I don’t see any problems with decoding N-Raw in Resolve. REDCINE gives a slightly different result for initial default debayering but the differences are pretty minor, it’s simple to tweak to taste and it’s a matter of taste which one would be preferred in any case. Personally I’d prefer it if BMD leave N-Raw decoding alone but expose more camera metadata which is pretty minimal at the moment.

REDCINEXP decodes NRAW differently, the highlight rolloff of NRAW with clipping is much better in REDCINEXP, and the color channel clipping is also addressed. But I am running MAC, the clipping area shows red/green noise bug which needs to be fixed.

I confirmed, the highlight rolloff of NRAW with clipping is much better in REDCINEXP, also i find the ability to change the ISO great, why is this option not available in Davinci Resolve Yet ? how to request for that feature to be added ? also is there a way the could make RedCine X Pro available as a DCTL ?

DCTLs are simple C code and unless you had the Red source to write from, not going to happen.

Red/Nikon could certainty make a plugin if BM refuses to update resolve. Plugins are very flexible, examples; Neat Video NR, Gyroflow stabilization.
