Help Sorting Footage from 3 cameras in cronological order

PostTue Apr 01, 2025 1:53 pm

Good day,

I use three cameras to capture footage: my Samsung S24 phone, DJI Air 3 drone, and GoPro Hero 10. Before backing up or using the clips, I trim some of them on my phone or computer to reduce their size for use in DaVinci Resolve (Free version 19.1.4).

However, when importing these files (MP4 and JPG) into the Media folder or any other Bin, I cannot find a way to list all the files in the exact chronological order in which they were taken. None of the available sorting options—Date Created, Date Modified, Created, or Added—arrange the clips in the correct sequence for easy editing.

To manage this, I have created three separate Bins: Phone, GoPro, and Drone. While this keeps each camera's footage in order, it forces me to constantly switch between Bins to find the next clip in the timeline of events. (I’ve attached a screenshot of each Bin for reference.)

Although the files in each Bin are named sequentially, I’m struggling to combine them into one Bin while maintaining the correct chronological order. I would appreciate any advice or solutions to help resolve this issue.

Hard to tell for sure what you’re saying is happening here but…

If all your devices were set to the same date and time when you shot stuff then sorting by date created should just work.

I’m guessing that some of the devices didn’t have the right date set. If it were me I’d get a utility that adjusts the creation date and offset the wrong ones so they’re all in sync.

There are other options but I think this is the best one.

Thanks, Joe.

Let me give you an example of what happens: When I'm on a long trip (like this one was), I often try to clean up footage before I get back to the office to edit. So I might take some clips and trim them down to remove most of the unwanted footage. For example, drone files are quite large, and the recording doesn't always start or stop at the ideal times.

When I trim these clips to keep only the necessary footage, the PC (or phone, in the case of phone footage) updates the "modified date" of the clips. On a PC, File Explorer shows several date fields—like "Date," "Date Modified," and "Date Created." The "Date" field usually retains the original creation date, but both "Date Modified" and "Date Created" get updated to reflect when I edited the clip.

DaVinci Resolve, however, only shows "Date Added," "Date Created," and "Date Modified." None of these fields carry over the original creation date of the trimmed clips, or reflect the "Date" field as shown in File Explorer.

So date created isn’t the date created?
Or rather the date created is the date the split out clip was created not the date the media was shot. (Capture date perhaps?)

Still not clear to me if Resolve is doing something wrong, if the prep program is doing something wrong, or what.
