Alert Red Viewer Background Mode... Where?

PostSat Apr 05, 2025 11:04 am

As someone who constantly adds a red generator to my video1 layer just to see where my video image ends. I got really excited about this one feature. But... For the life of me... I cannot find "Timeline View Options > Viewer Background settings".

Where is it? I have searched everywhere I can think of. The menus at the top. Every 3 dot menu on a viewer. System settings, user settings, project settings, nowhere do I find anything called "Timeline View Options" or "Viewer Background settings".

I can confirm by opening the about splash screen that I am indeed using Studio Version 20.0B Build 23.

I am of course assuming it's user error. But please. If someone knows where it is. Point it out in the most passive aggressively way you can think of. :D

On the timeline just avove the timecode select the icon looking like 3 clips with a checkmark under. Then in "Viewer Background" menu item select "Alert Red"

It does not alert for "burned in" black letterbox.

Ahhh, there it is!

As I suspected. User error. :)

hmmm, the feature might not be as useful as I first thought... because. While it will show up red in the program monitor, it won't show up red on clean feed monitor. And. If I use an adjustment layer and zoom out the video clip underneath. It will still show as black background because (I assume) the adjustment layer registers as used video pixels so to speak. hmmm... I guess I'll continue to use a red video generator clip for this.

just a couple of pics to illustrate.

This is the result with adjustment layer enabled:

This is the result if I disable the adjustment layer:

Please ignore the glare on the monitors. I do make sure to get rid of those when I do my color work. :D

Again, I think I understand why it happens. I just wish it would treat the red background as the actual background. :)

I've looked three times and can't find it, either. It's at times like this I wish the manual had an actual shot of the drop down menu to show us where it comes from. I notice there's no "Tool Tips" for the upper right icons in the Viewer, either. Alert Red is also not available in Keyboard Customization.

If somebody can grab a screen shot, I'd appreciate it.

Timeline View Options, under Viewer Background. We now get:

Checkered
Black
Gray
Alert Red

You NEED training.

It's not user error, it's a Resolve UI error, because this is not a Timeline View option and does not belong there. This should be in the Timeline Viewer settings in the top right drop-down menu of the Timeline Viewer.

Blackmagic should do themselves a favour and rename "Timeline View Options" to "Timeline Display Options" because the View/Viewer similarity is clearly confusing their own devs.

This short YouTube clip from Daniel Batal will show you exactly where to activate “Alert Red” on the Edit Page:

Agreed. Until DaVinci makes this “feature” more practical then a red generator is a better home-made solution.
