How can I upgrade from 19 to 20?

PostSat Apr 05, 2025 6:14 pm

I own Resolve Studio 19, but am not finding any way to upgrade to 20. Can someone please let me know how to go about that? Thanks! :)

It is a free upgrade. Just download Resolve Studio 20 and install it. That is all, and no need to activate it as it will overwrite the installd version and automatically use its activation key.

Here is alink for the support page, and make sure to download the Studio version:
https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/suppor ... and-fusion

But be aware this is a beta version and will have bugs. Also if you open any version 19 projects, they will be converted to v20 projects and can not be opened in v19 anynmore.

Make sure you make a backup of your database(s) from the Project Manager before updating to version 20 in case you wish to go back to 19. Any project opened in version 20 will not be backwards compatible with previous versions. With a database backup you will be able to go back if you need to.

If I download the beta for 20, will it give me a prompt to update once it's a stable version? Also, will the beta override my 19 copy? I'm talking about the free version btw.

Yes you should get notification for updated versions. And yes, installing newer version of Resolve always overwrite the previous one.

I'm stumped by my upgrade. I had Studio 19.x and mistakenly downloaded and installed the free version. After realizing my error, I downloaded the Studio version... but while the folder says "Studio" the application file inside is the same (Install Resolve 20.0b). And, of course, it won't install over the same (free) version of itself. I'd uninstall Resolve but I'm anxious about projects I'm currently working on and since the file name is the same-- and it doesn't appear to be the version for Studio-- I'm reluctant. Help?

Yes, the installer name of the Studio version is still named Install Resolve 20.0b.exe

I am not sure if installing a studio version will overwrite the installed free version, but my guess it will.

For the record, project files of the free version is combatible with the Studio version.

I upgraded, but now it gives the message- "You have reached a limitation with DaVinci Resolve". Apparently it is not reading the key like it is supposed to! Is there any way to go back to 19?

When exactly did you get this error? Can you provide a screen shot?

I asked perplexity about this error and it says:
The "You have reached a limitation with DaVinci Resolve" error typically occurs when you attempt to use features that are only available in the paid Studio version of the software while using the free version.

Maybe by mistake you installed the free version?

The error message appears when I try to open a project that I worked on last week.

Are you sure you are running the Studio version? Because it seems like you are trying to open the project in the free version of Resolve!
