subtitle bug

PostSun Apr 06, 2025 12:26 am

I seem to be the bearer of bad news today.

When I use output blanking 2.40:1 to crop the image, it either show the subtitles on top of the black bars or not! hehe
Sometimes they are underneath. Sometimes, if I press play they vanish. Sometimes, they are on top and correct.

Update: subtitles only appear consistently when the area on the timeline is showing a blue line above the clips. I must assume this is due to rendering an effect applied to the clips below.

Please can someone fix this!

One approach you could try is working in a timeline that matches the desired aspect. That way all titles and effects will always be appropriate for that framing. Any necessary black would be added automatically during delivery.

(I wish companies like Amazon and Netflix would do this. There are Home Theaters out there with 2.4 aspect screens, and any subtitles that appear "in the black" get cut off.)
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Hey Jim,

I would love to, and usually set my projects to 2048x858 but this one is subtitle heavy, so I wanted to drop the subs under the picture in the bar area. Looks nicer and easier to read. I hate subs over pictures.

But one would have thought that DVR would allow one to read subs over blanking!!!

Even if it's subtitle heavy, for burnt in subtitles it is customary to put them over the image.

I don't know what your final output will be, but I remember once working with a director that was doing it this way for a theatrical delivery unaware that the subtitles would be outside the projected area.

But I agree, it is still a bug. They either should show or not over the blanking.

In my opinion, blanking should be on the top layer. Requiring a second render to put anything above it.
