I love the new Record Voiceover Tool.
That said, let’s dive straight into some suggestions and address a few issues to improve functionality for VO professionals without compromising simplicity for general users. I'm on Win 11 latest updates.
Suggestions:
1. Sound Card Selection: Should rely on the device specified in the Video and Audio I/O Settings instead of requiring a separate sound card selection.
2. Mic Input Patching: Should list all device inputs as a dropdown menu or be relocated entirely to Video and Audio I/O Settings.
3. Headphone Monitoring: Should be assignable to the headphone output rather than generic, undefined channels.
4. Stereo Option Removal: VO recordings typically use mono tracks. If dual microphones are needed (e.g., for discussions), they should record to separate mono tracks—not stereo. This functionality could be addressed on the Fairlight page if beyond the scope here.
5. Dialogue Box Options: The dropdown menus in the Record VO window should include:
1 File Name
2 Record Track
3 Audio Input (listing individual mono channels, not stereo pairs)
4 Headphone Monitor Output (listing stereo pairs).
6. Mono Voice Monitoring: Audio should play in both ears when monitoring a mono voice track.
7. Dual Mic Monitoring: If two microphones are connected for two voice artists, monitoring should still play both in both ears as dual mono rather than stereo.
8. Live Mic Assignment: Live mic outputs should not be assignable to system monitor outputs assigned in the Audio & Video I/O menu (to prevent acoustic feedback).
9. Pre-Roll Option: Add a menu option for pre-roll, matching the duration of the countdown, to facilitate drop-ins.
10. Re-Take Button: Include a Re-Take button next to the Record button.
(Note: Drop-ins, pre-roll, and the re-record button are covered in detail in my separate post.)

Issues These Suggestions Address:
1. Mic Input Assignment: Users cannot use microphones assigned to channels other than Ch1. For instance, my devices with mic pres on channels 8-12 become unusable.
2. Headphone Monitoring: Currently, headphone monitoring is restricted to Ch1 left only.
3. Monitoring Output Assignment: The default output is Ch1-2, which is typically connected to
monitor speakers. Headphone outputs often use separate channels (e.g., Ch 3-4 or in my case Ch9-10) and must be assignable.
While simplicity is great for non-audio professionals, these changes would keep this straightforward while significantly improving functionality for VO professionals. Streamlined workflows and greater flexibility will benefit both casual users and seasoned VO artists / mixers.
