Vertical video rotate attribute not applying to proxy.

PostThu Apr 10, 2025 10:33 pm

If I start a new project and set project settings to vertical video.
Create proxy’s

>Import footage – proxy’s automatically connect.
>While still on “ Prefer Full Resolution Media” right click select Attributes
>On the Video tab select Rotate 90deg OK.
>Now the video orientation is correct.
>Select “Prefer Proxy’s the video orientation in the viewport flips back to 0 deg and should be 90deg.
>When selecting “Prefer original Media” the 90deg orientation set in Attributes is once again correct, just not for the proxies.

This make vertical video incompatible with proxies.

This is, unfortunately, by design according to BMD. There are a number of attributes that must be “burned in” to the proxies for things to look right. Maybe one day they’ll change their minds but that day is not here.

Either way, the BM Resolve team has done an incredible job enhancing the vertical video editing experience. Not addressing the vertical proxy issue with passing orientation attributes through to proxies is a detriment to an otherwise great experience.

This proxy compatibility with vertical video needs to be addressed at some point.

Ok so try this: you have resolve on a facilities computer you hired to do a job in vertical and have 2tb of source footage on a server with proxies to create 50 x 2min video's for a web store.

I just hope this isn't a bucket that gets kicked down the road too much longer, and the brilliant minds at BM can figure something out.

This make vertical video incompatible with proxies.

I don't know of a way to do this except to create the proxies manually. I think anamorphic CinemaScope is also an issue (and has been for awhile); making manual proxies works around that problem.

I think the issue for most users is there’s not BM Resolve method to use this workflow. There is also no clear way to make proxies for resolve with other tools.

In the meantime, maybe just add a few buttons to the proxy generator?
