Coexist DVR 20 and 17?

PostMon Apr 14, 2025 8:47 am

On a new mac Mini M4 I plan to install DVR 20.
Will it be possible to install also DVR 17 for accessing a database in that format?
Thanks!

Short answer, no.

But, the Database can be upgraded to work in version 20, so it's not really necessary to have both.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I think it works fine. You just need to install in folders with different names, for example DaVinci Resolve 17 and DaVinci Resolve 20. I'm just not sure if DVR 17 can be installed on an M4 processor.

It doesn’t quite work because all the versions share files in a common preferences folder. The big gotcha is which database to attach to. If you change it in one version it’s changed in the other as well.

God no. Don't do that. Very bad idea.

Thanks for the advice not to do it. Not even from another user account?
I imagine I can backup and convert the v17 database for my use. But the thing is, a couple of members in my team are still on older hackintosh systems (I know...) and still working on DVR17.
Cheers!

You should be fine as long as you don’t need to open a project in 17 that you’ve already opened in 20.

Of course BMD doesn’t support anyone doing this so if things somehow break they probably won’t be too sympathetic.

You might find this article useful:

Idea is to install a separate copy of the macOS and then use "dual boot" to literally use a different computer, so you can have v17 installed on one and v20 - on the other. If you want just to playtest v20 you could even use an external drive to install the separate copy of macOS, but it will be much slower.
However please remember - if you open a project in v20 - it will not be possible to open it again in v17!

A Dual Boot system will absolutely work, provided the o.p. uses a different Project Database. I still think the entire idea is skating on thin ice.
