Does DVR Studio 20 have paid updates?

PostWed Apr 16, 2025 8:28 am

Someone on the Apple Final Cut Pro Forum made the claim that DVR Studio 20 would cost $295 per year for updates.

I told them politely that this wasn't the case but I felt I had better double-check!
Forget specs. It's surprising what can be achieved with basic hardware!

M2 Mac mini 8GB RAM 256GB SSD plus numerous 1-2TB SSD/NVMe, HDDs.
M4 Mac mini 16GB RAM 256GB SSD . . . a ridiculously overpowered machine!

Lol. Not true, currently all updates are still free.
The source of the claim is that BMD have always reserved the right to charge for updates, and recently reminded users of that.

Thanks Andy.

I have just been reading another post and it looks as though it is a "maybe" and not imminent.

Certainly the $295 per annum is preposterous.

This nonsense has got out of hand. It all stems from a comment in the 2025 NAB presentation by Grant Petty when he got to the release of Resolve 20. He said this release was still free to current Studio users but they may in the future make a charge for updates. Nothing has been decided and it may not happen at all. The one thing Blackmagic won't be doing is going to a subscription only model, something that Grant has always been against.
To hear exactly what Grant said, watch the 2025 update video on the Blackmagic website from 2.09.05.
Resolve Studio 20.0 build 49
Dell XPS 8700 i7-4790, 24GB RAM, 2 x Evo SSDs, GTX1060/6GB (572.16 Studio Driver), Win10 Home, Speed Editor, Faderport 1, Calibrated Eizo ColorEdge CS230 + BenQ & Samsung monitors for UI, Canon C100mk2, Zoom H2n.
