why can't i copy a local grade to remote version in davinci

PostThu Apr 17, 2025 6:20 am

Hello folks,
I have clips that comes from one source footage but it’s been cut into multiple parts on the timeline. In the color page, each part shows up as a separate clip. I’ve done some grading on the first clip using a local version and I like the result.

Now what I want is to save this local grade as a remote version, but I can’t find a way to do it. In remote versions you can right click and copy to local, but in local versions there is no option to copy to remote. I don’t understand why this option isn’t there.

The only way I found is at the bottom of the color page where you have options like copy local grades to remote and use remote grades. But the problem is these affect all clips from the same source, not just the one I’m working on. If I choose copy local to remote, all the other clips from the same source will also get that remote grade applied, which I don’t want yet. I just want to save my current local grade as a remote version for now without forcing it onto the rest of the clips.

So, is there a proper way to do this ?

Why do you need to use the remote grades? What if you just worked in Local, saved multiple shots to the Gallery, then apply the Gallery stills to each shot as you move along?

There are people who will do an initial pass in Remote, simply because that's a quick way of applying an overall grade to identical shots throughout the project. Once they get to the end, they flip over to Local, then go through it again, shot by shot, and make specific changes depending on the actual nature of that individual shot.

It's never intended to go back and forth between Remote and Local and Back to Remote.

You could "theoretically" copy the timeline, leave one in Remote and the other in Local, and kind of/sort of do what you're talking about, but you'd have to be very cautious and stay aware of which timeline you're in at all times.

If you simply make a new version from the right click menu, local or remote, it will save the current state as the new version, for a clip with many segments that share the same source you might have to come up with your own naming scheme, this is what I do sometimes.
