Is having a training partner mandatory for certification?

I'm looking forward to learning how to use DVR using the ressources available on the website.
I saw that the form right before taking the online exam asked to select a training partner from a drop-down menu.
So there's my question :
Why is this there and is it mandatory to get certified?
I couldn't find a clear answer so, if someone could confirm this, it would be of great help!
