Thumbnail obscures cursor

AS per the title, a new "feature" of 20 - I now when dragging a clip to timeline get a thumbnail of it obscuring the placement, so I can't see where the clip is going. Can this be turned off?

It cannot. But...this has
always been true for Resolve.
It looks like the size of the thumbnail is using fixed pixel dimensions, so as your screen real estate goes up, the size of that thumbnail goes down. Working on a 2160 monitor, it's smaller than the graphic of the clip you're dragging.
Until things change, you can likely find relief working with a larger monitor. (Which will bring other benefits as well.

I *am* using a 2160p monitor.
This was not an issue before. I suspect it might be related to the fact when dragging the clip into place, it's now using a crosshair as opposed to an arrow-style cursor.
See issue - my cursor is right in the middle of the thumb, so I can't see where the clip is actually being placed. The alignment of the thumbnail is perhaps the issue as opposed to its existence.

The crosshair is showing where the leading edge of the clip is. It would be nice if the thumbnail scaled down with smaller track heights. The crosshair is what your curser changes into. Can't say that I am in favour of it.

In v20 Beta, the size of this thumbnail depends on the size of the thumbnail in the media pool.
If you select the list view, it is gone.
IMHO this feature is useless and should be abandoned.
Here is another post that addresses this issue:

As to its usefulness, I have to agree with you Christoph.

In my not so humble opinion, there should be an option in the settings to completely disable all previews when dragging (even from the source viewer).
There should also be an option to disable ALL animations.
For me, DaVinci Resolve is a tool and has to be efficient, not fancy.

+1, the icon obscuring the bounds of the clip that I'm trying to drop in place - and clarity on which row it plans to drop onto - is irksome. No UI scaling, similar monitor example.

Related: dragging media to move which bin it is stored in has a similar issue. The icon heavily obscures the text names of the folder tree to the left of the media icon area, and it is tricky to be sure you are dropping the icon into the intended folder.

I too feel this unpleasant change.

I have reported this in another thread, and I have to also suggest to Blackmagic to bring back the older behaviour as it was before resolve 20.

Dragging from the preview window also has a thumbnail, which similarly covers the destination area on the timeline. Precise work when dragging clips becomes impossible. I have a 32-inch 4K monitor with the UI display scale set to AUTO
