Novices like me

PostThu May 01, 2025 1:12 am

I installed 20 Beta on my system and it was a dismal failure. So much so that I reverted back to 19. Then I decided to do some homework. Glad I did! I have a pretty decent system with an AMD Ryzen 9 5900 processor, ample memory, and an Asus 4070 Super graphics card.

It turns out that in spite of Window's assertions, the driver was absolutely not up to date. And that made all the difference in the world.

This is some great software, cutting edge. And sometimes it's hard for an old man to stay on top of things. But that's my issue, not Blackmagic's. I'm back to Beta 20, and loving it!

I wish there was a way for the error messages to say, "hey, your Graphics Driver is out of date!", but it's more complicated than that (coming from the OS) -- you either get a numbered internal error message (referring to hardware issues) or just a crash.

But checking the graphics driver is often Step 1 for Windows troubleshooting.

Don't trust Windows to tell you if things are actually up to date. Always go to the manufacturers website to check for updates. ;)

For Nvidia drivers I recommend updating them manually and check their site for updates at least every few months. Downloading and installing the drivers through Windows update isn't recommended as they're typically out of date.

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/

I don't install the Geforce Experience app (preference) and only run a clean install of the driver (again, preference). Also, this way you can save the driver installs easily in case you need to revert back to a previous version.

Sure would be nice if there were a database/site that kept track for each card of what driver works with Resolve. Anyone interested in making such a thing?
