Hi, just wondering if anyone can help. I did a search for people having a similar issues and only found a post on this forum with no answers (just found out I'm not allowed to post URLs).
We have a small restoration department that runs a Resolve / Phoenix workflow. Our in-house scanning is a BMD Cintel. Generally our workflow goes something like:
- Transcode scanned .CRIs to .DPX (12 bit) using Resolve Media Management
- Restore in Phoenix
- Grade / conform in Resolve
All our output is generally just Rec 709, so we work non-colour-managed and do the final grade scene-referred.
Recently I received some scans that have a few errant highlights. If I drop the .CRIs into a timeline they are easily recoverable and roll off nicely. However, when it came time to grade there is a hard clip. First I thought it might be something Phoenix is doing, so I went back and checked the initial transcoded .DPX sequence. Same issue. (see attached images with a similar offset / gain adjustment)
Can anyone suggest an alternative way of transcoding Cintel .CRIs that will preserve this highlight latitude? I'm open to different formats or colour management if it will help.
My short term fix is just to drop the reel into a timeline and grade these specific shots down, but I'd rather do all the grading in one go.
Thanks in advance!
