Reorient 360º with horizon?

PostFri May 02, 2025 4:45 pm

I'm a noob with Resolve Studio and am looking for some guidance on reorienting 360º video.

I posted a clip to YouTube with a sample video <.../watch?v=Obg487J11I0> (can't include links). This was taken with a Insta360 X5 attached to a "selfie stick" on the back tiedown of a small plane.

The goal is to decouple the video from the plane and lock it to the horizon.

Since the camera is rigid to the plane when we enter a banked turn the horizon banks and the plane's wings stay level. Is there a way for Resolve to track the horizon and keep the video level during banking turns?

I've attempted to accomplish this in Insta360 Studio using keyframes and manually reorienting with each turn, but this gets cumbersome very quickly.

There is also a fair amount of wind vibration as expected attached to a plane going ~130mph. The Insta360 FlowState stabilization seems to prioritize the plane in the foreground, and the ground still jittery <.../watch?v=Uvx3WfCP-3w>.

Is it possible to mask out the plane and use the Spherical Stabilizer and Tracking algorithms to only use the ground for reference?

Any insight the best method to accomplish these tasks in Resolve Studio would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Ian

Here is the first pass at a process that worked. <YouTube /watch?v=XqY-b7aycko&t> With the horizon level it definitely feels more comfortable when watching it in VR.

In Fusion:
1) PanoMap - Center the plane in the frame
2) PolygonMask - Create a polygon that covers the full extent of the plane control surfaces
3) SphericalStabilizer - Run the stabilizer algorithm with the mask merge on
4) PanoMap - Manually correct the horizon

The last PanoMap is the tedious step and it would be nice if could be a little more automated. Since the plane is centered in the frame, only pitch and roll changes need to be corrected.

This is fairy trivial to fix visually on any single frame. To correct for pitch changes the horizon at the edges of the equirectangular projection need to be aligned to the center line. For roll changes the horizon at 25% is aligned to the center line.

It seems like there could be a way to automate this process. Is there a way to use a Tracker block (or another tool) to follow the horizon line? From what I’ve tried it seems to pick up an object on the horizon and track it as we fly past.

Again, any insight into a possible solution is greatly appreciated.
