Disabled clip and cache

PostWed May 07, 2025 4:42 am

Is there a scenario where removing (backspace) a disabled clip on the Edit page would affect the image, or even moving a disabled clip if no (non-disabled) transitions have changed or (non-disabled) clip limits were affected by the move?

I notice that if I adjust a disabled clip, the cache goes red and start re-building. I think it did that in v19 as well, but it's still irksome.

This comes up when I have clips that get enabled/disabled while exploring options, and later I delete clips that are confirmed as not to be in the final product. If it's an adjustment clip this can cause a long section of video to unnecessarily rebuild cache.

Any time you change things, the Cache would need to rebuild.

How can it be otherwise?

@Jim, it can be otherwise if there is no need for the cache to rebuild. If deleting a disabled clip does not change the image, then... the image does not need to be rebuilt.

Ahhh, now I see what you're saying. (I thought the changes you were making to the Disabled clip was to Enable it.)

Maybe this is a good scenario to follow Peter's advice?

It is an often voiced concern that the cache is too "twitchy."

Lots of things can trigger a re-cache even when there is no change to the video output.

A common feature request to help with this is to be able to "force cache" from IN to OUT points only. That way you don't need to run in smart or user cache modes and watch your entire timeline re-cache before it gets to the bit you actually want to see . :)

@Mark, heh - I do find it helpful that if you position the timeline marker and press play for even a moment before pausing, then new caching will start from that spot and go forward. That's my workaround for giant cache restarts in the middle of a workflow.
