Waveform generation for audio clips.

Checked the display waveforms box.
Tried clearing cache, swapping file location of cache, relinking media, creating proxy version of media, uninstalling and reinstalling.
No matter what I try i can't get them to load.
In this particular project I have 6 files, sometimes 1 might load waveforms, other times a different one will. But it takes a long time and there's no guarantee that they ever actually load.
Is there any actual fix for this? I've wasted an entire day trying to get this to work.
