Strange bug: frames playing twice second half of clips gone

PostWed May 14, 2025 9:04 am

Hi. I'm really confused. I'm looking at some of my old URSA 12K Braw shots in Davinci Resolve and every frame plays twice and the second half of the clip is missing. This seems to be a problem with all clips across multiple projects. I've also tried in Blackmagic Raw player. Any suggestions?

Here's an example: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/q8qjrc8q ... aq1fp&dl=0

I've uploaded 2 files: the braw and a mov of the same clip. When I open these files in Resolve, they are the same duration but the braw only has the first half of the clip because each frame is played twice. Basically it's as if the clip was slowed down to 50% speed then halved in length. Not sure what's going on here.

I'm on a Mac running MacOS 15.4.1 and I was on Resolve 19 when I noted the issue but I installed 20 to see if that would help and it made no difference.

I've now tested on another mac as well with the same result.

I'm seeing it here in 20b3 for Windows as well.

Thanks Jim. I'm wondering if my raw files have been damaged somehow. It's very strange.

I would expect a 'damaged' .braw file to simply not work at all.

I don't do 25 fps (or have your camera). Could this be a misinterpreted Interlacing issue? Could the clip be 25i?

I don't think so. The Ursa cannot shoot interlaced. That clip was shot at 50fps slow motion for 25p playback

OK.

Could this simply be the way the camera recorded the footage? Maybe because the recording media just didn't have the chops for 50 fps?

The footage used to be fine. That's the strange thing. The .mov file I uploaded with the braw was originally made from the b-raw.

The .mov is the same duration and framerate, but has no duplicate frames. The b-raw only has half the clip.

Okay. I found a copy of Resolve 18 and it plays the braw files correctly. Thank goodness! I was getting worried.

When I open any of the files in Blackmagic Raw Player i still get duplicate frames and only half the clip, but in Resolve 18 all the clips are fine. I've attached a screenshot of the sample braw file I uploaded in both Raw Player and Resolve. As you can see, in the final frame of the clip in Raw Player on the left the lion is busy sitting down. This is half way through the clip. The same clip in Resolve on the right has the correct final frame.

Super strange! I hope this can get fixed asap.

Yeah, this is looking like a bug.

Though...I wonder what would happen if you were to install Blackmagic RAW 4.5?

Definitely a bug. I did install RAW 4.5 initially and it did not fix the issue.

I have noticed that if I trim the clips using davinci resolve the problem gets fixed.

If this bug was introduced in v19 then it has been around for a while. Strange that I could not find anyone else with the issue. Maybe something to do with my specific framrates. I shoot a lot of slow motion with my project rate set to 25p.
