need to get a usable DaVinci Res version for my oldie comp

PostFri May 16, 2025 1:44 pm

hello ..since days I'm digitizing old VHS-tapes and I'd need to get a suitable version fo DaVinci Resolve for my Computer. Well, it's an older one, but still quite okay and fast enough with everything else, I'm dealing with.

my GPU (NVIDIA GeForce8400GS) is an older one, I know, but works with the latest driver, of course
it's got OpenCL, CUDA, OpenGL3.3 and so on
RAM I have 16GB and the CPU is okay-fast ..Win10 / 64bit

I failed in installing the latest versions of DaVinci Res (19 or 20) of course, because my PC just can't handle it. So I went back to older versions 18, 17, 16, 15 but I even couldn't start the program with the installing files, I could find on the Blackmagic-Download page (messages like:

didn't find the point "clEnqueueMarkerWithWaitList" in the DLL "C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Resolve.exe" and so on (indeed, there is no "resolve.exe" there)

I even went down to version 14, at first it seemed to work but obviously there are so many things missing and I guess, it's just a corrupted installation-file ..I just don't know - it sucks

Could anybody show me a link to a working full-version, which I could use? Nothing is working, so far.

Thanks, Anita

Your Geforce 8400GS is the problem. It is just too old and is not compatible with Resolve.
Resolve Studio 20.0 build 49
Dell XPS 8700 i7-4790, 24GB RAM, 2 x Evo SSDs, GTX1060/6GB (572.16 Studio Driver), Win10 Home, Speed Editor, Faderport 1, Calibrated Eizo ColorEdge CS230 + BenQ & Samsung monitors for UI, Canon C100mk2, Zoom H2n.

hello Charles

..well, thanks - but what exactly is missing there? The GPU's got OpenCL, CUDA and so on..

the funny thing is - by mistake I downloaded a "studio" version (15, or 16, can't remember) and everything seems to start working. I even got the information from DaVinci, that my Graphic isn't the newest one, so that I need to reduce my expectation to "HD" quality ..well that's fine, I said to myself, I don't need more than "HD", I can live with that. So I continued till the moment of truth, when I realized that it's a studio-version (not a free one, as I expected) and that there's a key needed

thx, Anita

That GPU has a low Compute Capability of 1.2 which limits what CUDA version it can use. If you try to run Resolve with OpenCL it will be very slow.
The current version 20 of Resolve uses CUDA 12.8 which requires your GPU to have a minimum Compute Capability of 5.5.
As Resolve has become more powerful over the various versions so has the need for it's hardware requirements.
These are the current minimum requirements for Resolve, both Free and Studio.

Hello... well, thanks – I guess I need a hardware upgrade then. I love my GPU because it's passively cooled and so quiet that there's no fan running... just me – me, the computer, and the challenge – no noise ;)

I really just needed a way to improve the poor quality of my VHS recordings, and DaVinci was recommended to me. Thx, Anita
