When using the Color Match my colors are way off?

PostTue May 20, 2025 7:19 pm

Hello All,

I have the Calibrite ColorChecker Passport Video 2 and a Sony A7 iii that is in a Picture Profile called HLG3. No matter what color profile I have used I am getting very drastic results when using the color match. The percentage off ranges from 15% to 50% and when I select the match button it turns the picture completely brown, black, red, etc. It seems to be doing the opposite than making a slight adjustment to match the colors. Does anyone have any suggestions why this is happening. I have watched lots of YouTube tutorials and they all explain how to use it the same way but nowhere have I found any information on why it goes so wrong. Thank you for any suggestions. I truly appreciate you.

X-rite recognized this and made a tutorial of the work around

Jump to 5:00 and you will see them show how to use the Hue-Hue and Hue-Sat curves to manually match.

You have a separate problem that HLG3 is something Sony made up and is undocumented. So you don't have any tools in resolve for color management.

XtremeStuff details it all here https://xtremestuff.net/hlg-normalized-transform-manual/. They are also selling a DCTL to perform color management for this. Do note Resolve free does not support DCTLs.

No doubt other people out there are offering HLG luts, many of dubious quality.

I expect most people are just setting resolve to HLG and winging it.

While this is the core problem in your case, I wouldn't call Color Match completely broken.

If you use a profile known to Color Match, then adjust intensity and contrast first before giving it a try, it can get you into the ballpark. But with some practice, you should get there manually in less than half an half a minute as well, at least if you have a control surface.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.
