Confusing Installation

PostWed May 21, 2025 11:17 pm

Hi,

I purchased DaVinci Resolve Studio - I had a free version of DVR.

I notice that there is a new, named instance of DVR as Studio.

What happens to my files in DVR - Free?

Do I have to delete / uninstall the DVR - Free?

I also have a DVR icon on my dock - I'm a Mac user - is this the right version?

I looked and was not able to find details about this. I also did a search in the DVR manual for "uninstall" and I didn't find anything.

Appreciate your help.

Breaking it down:

DaVinci Resolve Studio is a paid software version. It needs a Studio license.
DaVinci Resolve is our free version with some limitations. It does not need a license.
The installers for both DaVinci Resolve and DaVinci Resolve Studio are available as free downloads.

1. Purchase your Studio license

• directly from Blackmagic Design - Go to Products, Click Buy Online Now.
• from our resellers - List of Official Resellers
• as a rental license add on to your Blackmagic Cloud plan.

If you're looking for the free version, skip this step.

2. Download the Studio installer

• Go to Support, DaVinci Resolve & Fusion Software. In the left most column, select the latest Studio version.
• From the products page - Go to Products, Click Free Download Now and select the Studio version.

The free version is available from the same links - just select DaVinci Resolve, not DaVinci Resolve Studio.

3. Install DaVinci Resolve Studio

• On macOS, unzip, mount the DMG image, double click the installer and follow instructions.
• On Windows, uninstall any existing DaVinci Resolve versions, unzip, enter the folder, double click the exe file and follow instructions.
• On Linux, uninstall any existing DaVinci Resolve versions, unzip, enter the folder, double click the .run file and follow instructions.

To uninstall, use the bundled Uninstall utility. On Windows, you can also use the Programs Settings to uninstall DaVinci Resolve. Uninstalling Resolve does not affect existing projects and presets.

4. Connect Studio license when prompted.

Start up DaVinci Resolve Studio.

• If using a dongle, ensure dongle is connected before starting DaVinci Resolve.
• If using an activation key, you will be prompted on start up.
• If using a Blackmagic Cloud rental license, the same screen allows you to login to Blackmagic Cloud at start up to verify the plan and use the rental license.

This step is not relevant when using the free DaVinci Resolve.

When switching systems,
• you can connect the dongle to (or log in to Blackmagic Cloud in) the new system.
• the activation key limits the number of personal devices (and frequency of switching). Before switching, start DaVinci Resolve Studio in the old system, and select deactivate from the Help menu.

Hi - I have done everything until Step 3 - and purchased the DVR Studio.

On the Mac, do I have to (a) uninstall the free version, and (b) then install the Studio version? Or, does the Studio version install overwrite (a)?

Also, I am worried about my project files - do I have to save them somewhere, or are they untouched by uninstallation / overwrite?

Thanks,

Randy

Just install.

No, and yes.
