Please no new Features - Waiting for release

PostFri May 23, 2025 11:13 am

Hello,

It's great that Blackmagic keeps adding new features to DR, but they shouldn't do that in a Beta 4. Users are desperately waiting for the final version to finally be able to use DR productively, especially considering the new hardware. There's currently a risk that the release will arrive when the new hardware (nVidia 5080) is already outdated.

New features are always added during the beta cycle. Some are based on user feedback during beta testing and some are simply finishing-up features that were not entirely fleshed-in prior to the initial beta. We won't see the official release of v20 for a couple of months if BMD holds to their historical pattern.

Then a logical solution would be to release a patch for version 19 to at least be compatible with current hardware.

I think it's a fair request that the current official release of DaVinci works with the current generation of graphic cards. This is the wrong forum but I built three systems with in the last six months using RTX4090s. If I had waited 3 months and used 5090s instead, it would have been a complete horror show. That's three copies of Resolve, Two Deck Links, a Mini Color Panel and a Decklink PCI Card purchased from Blackmagic that would be either running on a beta version that shouldn't be in a production environment or would be messed up because of incompatibility with the current versions of purchasable hardware.

Adding RTX50xx support should have been added to 19 when the first beta was released. As of right now, in my opinion, they are showing that current users are not a priority.

I'm currently holding off on building new systems for the department until Blackwell is supported or until Resolve 20 can take over from 19.

The whole point of a Beta release is to try out new things before a final release. Some companies do not have Beta releases and users wait for the full release. You can do the same and ignore Beta releases completely. It is a way of Blackmagic getting the help of users to find bugs and give input to new features.

We need to update our hardware NOW because of the Windows 10 issue; only then would our entire production come to a standstill. We're already looking for alternatives to DR. If BM doesn't get on board, BM is completely out of the question for us.

In this respect I like what Adobe do with their products - all the Betas are never future releases, but rather outsider versions for testing the new features and critical bugs investigations. A 25.2 beta may have features a released 25.2 release won't get, and 25.3 Beta may have features tested for the already released 25.1 if they bugged. So basically betas are war fields for experiments, and the stable versions are the exact slices from those experiments. Maybe BM should try that approach too?

PS: please add as many new features as you can! DVR is so far the best software for video editing but it lacks some features other NLEs have had for years

You mean have a final release that has less than the Beta ? No I vote for the BM approach. Keep the Beta going until all the main bugs are fixed and let the users decide to use a Beta or the last full release. At least this way we all know what is going to be in the final release.

Yes, Adobe almost seems like a better choice to me. DM hardware is easy to sell, and the used market is growing, but what BM is doing right now is not only customer-unfriendly, but will only force customers to look for alternatives.

First you do not need to update your hardware if it is Win11 issue you are worried about. You can run WIN 11 on older hardware. Plenty of instructions on how to do that. I have update one of my old laptops no problem. Will do the same for my Threadripper later. A non issue. If you are updating for more performance with new CPU and GPU that is another topic. Neither is controlled by BlackMagic.

But we have to, because the hardware we need to upgrade is NOT supported by Windows 11 (please no hacks - we work in the enterprise sector). By the way: Windows 11 is underperforming on older systems!

Old graphics cards will also NOT be used in the new devices. If we invest, we'll do it wisely, not cobbled together.

Two things. I do understand. However if you are in an enterprise with Microsoft support you will likely not need to update to Win 11 yet. Also for a small fee can continue with support. I have seen no reports of WIN11 under performing on recently older systems. If anything my old laptop from 2017, is performing better than on Win 10. Also it is not a hack to update I used the Windows update itself. No registry hacks or anything like that a pure update just like any others. Downloaded and used the WIN11 iso file and did an install. Even used my Windows account. Windows relaxed the requirements a few months ago. Still need to do it in a particular way but nothing fancy just the order of doing things as far as I can remember. My reason is to maintain my Office365 on the home PC's I am certainly not going to buy new hardware for the 5 PC's we have just to get Word etc !!

Extending Windows support is possible, but it's not free either :(

My HP notebook was and still is significantly slower after an update to Windows 11, even though the company policy disables many Windows features. The next Windows 11 update (4GB) will add a lot of AI. The situation is similar on ASUS's company devices, which, although only two years old, have been significantly slowed down since Windows 11.

Unfortunately, some PCs are so old that I can't even get a TCM upgrade. New PCs are fine, because both modern RAM and M2 disks have significantly higher data throughput, which is a positive effect when editing 4/8K (braw) material.

For Office 365: Installation also works on Windows 10

Office365 support on WIN10 ends in October when WIN10 support ends. That is my reason to move to WIN11. Yes there is a charge to continue with WIN10 but I think only about $60 per year for security updates etc, so a lot cheaper than upgrading a PC until necessary. So if the PC is connected to internet and uses Office365 it will need to be Win11. If it is just a PC used for a few applications with no internet access then Win10 will still be OK. I will eventually upgrade my systems but other than the ones that do mail etc will wait.

What exactly is the issue?

I would expect 20 to be out of Beta before Windows 10 support goes EOL.

But even if it doesn't, Windows 10 will not stop working, it just won't get any more updates.

I'm not seeing the urgency to buy new hardware now. Am I just missing something?

Without updates - not secure.

If the situation with the USA continues to develop like this, you should buy hardware now, because no one knows how expensive hardware from the USA will be after their tariffs.

It is the US that will see the price increase from tariffs. A tariff is an import tax. Most computer products are made outside the US so it will depend where you live and whether you buy locally made PC's or from a major brand that could be made anywhere in the world.

Not really related to the beta versions, but I love how Reaper does their updates. They release small updates only a with few features or changes very, very frequently. They quickly work out the bugs and workflow issues for a few new features instead of throwing like 500 new features into a single update that are all at various stage of completion, everything is bugged out and nothing works, and then the developers have to do the mad scramble to try to dig out from underneath the avalanche of bug reports and complaints.

This is probably one of the factors in why Reaper is so incredible stable and things work as you expect them to.

I can confirm this, as I am one of them myself. Recently I have been looking at other editors to either fully replace Resolve or replace parts of Resolve that are causing me the most headaches. We'll see what happens...

I also would prefer to get some functional updates only like support for new GPUs to keep things going when older hardware isn't available anymore.

I am also NOT looking forward when BMD decides to cut off WIN 10 support for Resolve. It's a major headache getting forced to upgrade the OS on all company PCs. That might work for a large post facility with a dedicated IT to do all the testing and setup, but not for smaller ones like us.
Never change a running system.

BMG has rewritten the DVR code for version 20. Writing new code is not a last-minute decision, so fixing those issues would have had to wait. Lets see what the new code brings.

I’m sure they’ve rewritten some code.
I’m sure they HAVEN’T rewritten Resolve as a whole.

I think that statement comes from a misunderstanding of what Grant said in the NAB 2025 presentation where he talked about the effort of supporting Apple Silicon/Windows ARM and stuff like that. Now that those things are done they have more time for other things.

This is probably one of the factors in why Reaper is so incredible stable and things work as you expect them to.
I agree 100%. I've been using Reaper for quite a while now and think it's hands-down the best DAW on the market. It's like Reaper and DaVinci Resolve are "brothers from another mother". Although DR has Fairlight, I think of it more as a (somewhat) replacement for Adobe Audition, not a music-related DAW. My sister is a professional voice-over talent, and uses Audition. I can see Fairlight replacing 85% of what she does in AA.

Yeah, Reaper is amazing! But personally, I don't see any resemblance between Reaper and Resolve. I switched to Reaper after 18 years of using Samplitude and that switch was a dream because Reaper is very intuitive and unbelievably flexible so Reaper molds itself to work with me. Reaper is constantly adding odd niche settings that people ask for just so they can have it work the way they want. Reaper has put a lot of thought not only into its features, but also the usability of those features as well. The Actions List is one of the coolest features I've ever seen which provides literally unlimited flexibility in a way that is still intuitive and easy to use.

In contrast, I switched to Resolve from Vegas Pro and it has been a miserable experience for me. Resolve is extremely rigid and inflexible, everything is setup backwards from the way I want them and most of these things I cannot change so Resolve is working against me at every step of the way. We ask for basic settings, features, consistency, etc. but Blackmagic doesn't do them. It feels like very little thought goes into how features and the UI are implemented so even though many of the tools themselves are high quality, actually using the tools ends up being a massive headache. I'd say Resolve is the inverse of Reaper's flexibility and usability.

From day one that I started using Resolve, I have loved the quality of the tools but I've hated actually using Resolve and after 3 1/2 years, I still hate using Resolve. Now I'm at the point of looking elsewhere... currently the option I'm leaning towards is Vegas Pro 22 with Autograph for compositing/motion graphics and then Reaper for music editing. I'm still lingering to see if the beta ever starts addressing the issues I have, but at this point, I'm not counting on it... I'll see what happens though.

So glad I switched to Mac when M1 come out. My MacBook Pro M1 basically still perform as when I bought it 6 years ago. Yes many things I dont like about the Mac but you learn to live with it but relatability never a problem.

That is a very selfish attitude. I can use 19.x productively right now and I am more than happy to wait for them to get all the issues worked out of the new keyframe/curve editor before doing it.

After some time, perhaps.

But it ain't gonna blow up on you the day after 10 goes EOL. ;)

I think you'll be fine waiting for 20 to be released before upgrading hardware.

(Now...tariff pricing in a whole other thing. But you can easily buy now and build later.)

Windows updates are more likely to blow up your computer than having them off. Have a good firewall like TinyWall and a good antivirus and don't do stupid things on the internet. I only update my computer when a program requires a feature in added through a windows update, which is very rare. I miss the days of only pushing bug fixes and security patches through windows update. If BM tries to force us to update to windows 11, I will either stick with the current version of DR or switch to Linux (which I hate).

Yeah, that beta version has been great with the totally revamped user interface - only one big button anymore:
"Make it so."

That's exactly what this feels like and I think I've finally had enough of Resolve. Blackmagic has shown time and time again that they aren't interesting in actually finishing anything they start. The new keyframe and spline editors especially have been such a massive disappointment. Initially I had high hopes that these editors would continue to evolve over the next several beta versions and become really good by the final release. But apparently half-assed is "good enough" because all they need to do is the bare minimum to check off the box on their "feature list"... just like so many other areas of Resolve. Very frustrating!

The biggest change to v30 is that BMD finally switched to a subscription model. Instead of buying Resolve outright, users now pay a one-time fee for a lifetime license to use the software.

For your emotional well-being, work with whatever makes you happy and works for you. BMD has its priorities based on its research. For years, I've asked for a storyboard interface to assemble and manipulate the timeline. (Which is great for editing events and sports clips.) In this version, they seem to have applied some of the interface . hopefully they will further develop it.

Why continue developing? It would be nice if DaVinci Resolve finally worked flawlessly. What BM has delivered is bordering on a disgrace. DR20 is barely usable anymore, it crashes constantly.

The reasons are obvious; it seems to be directly related to the nVidia 5080, because older graphics cards work, as other users report.

The thing with practically any software out there is that it works bad on some systems and well - on some others. I for one have had crashes in 19 every time I worked in it. V 20 hasn't crashed since I installed it the day it was released. Nvidia 4080. And at the same time I have had an issue with SuperScale that bsods my PC everytime I use it. In v 19 (hasn't used it in v 20), whilst no NVidia 5000 user has had such issues. Why continue developing? To make the software better.

What would make me happy is to not waste the last 3 1/2 years learning and getting comfortable with Fusion while I was still holding out hope that Blackmagic would actually improve some of the areas that have been massive headaches. Unfortunately, it is becoming more and more apparent that Blackmagic has zero interest in improving these areas. As a result I will likely never be happy with Resolve.

Even though I'm certainly not looking forward to starting over with a new application, I have been looking at other editors recently. Several days ago I started demoing Autograph by Left Angle as a Fusion replacement. It has an OpenFX Live Link which means I'd be able to go back to Vegas Pro where the timeline editing isn't awful. And the best part, Autograph has an "Expose Parameter" feature (which does exactly what my request for "Publish to Edit Page" does) to put controls from Autograph into whatever editor you are using (as long as it supports OpenFX). So you can build your effects in Autograph, then control/keyframe them in the context of your edit on the timeline.

Here is there demo showing that in Resolve. The Expose Parameter part starts at 3:55.

This is exactly what I've been begging for from Blackmagic to do with Fusion and the Edit page for a long time. Having Fusion and the Edit page work together instead of fight against each other would solve major problems for anyone who needs to time effects in the context of their edit (like timing effects to music, motion graphics, etc.) but Blackmagic apparently has "other priorities".

BMD has its priorities based on its research.
Whatever research they've been doing that is telling them to add more AI bots instead of cleaning house by making Resolve more cohesive, intuitive, user friendly, customizable, etc. they need to stop that and do better research.

Maybe we should start a poll to collect some data for Blackmagic...
A) Fix what Resolve already has and make it work well
B) Add more AI bots

....Gee, I wonder which one would win? :?

Sean, I'd like to remind you, that for example you have been one of the strongest proponent of having VST side chaining support in Fairlight for years- and finally BMD did implement that with DVR 19.
So it is not true that Blackmagic has zero interest in improving.

But it is also clear that they will have to play the AI game, otherwise people will compare to Adobe (like they already did here in this forum) and complain about AI this and AI that.

It is clear that AI has been the new hot thing and is getting hotter with every step. Blackmagic is bound to compete with all others having AI tools.

And yes - I want a Fusion revamp as much as you want it.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Please no new Features - Waiting for release

PostSat May 31, 2025 4:43 pm

I’m currently evaluating Vegas as an alternative - using Parallels on my Mac. Not an ideal environment for it but so far it seems to work.

One thing that’s awesome so far though is their forum moderator. I told the group what I was doing - evaluating Vegas compared to Resolve - and he immediately chimed in to start helping. Clearly he’s somehow official - he’s the moderator - AND he’s reaching out to help. And I’m not even reporting a bug.

There’s also a place right there in the forum where tutorials are linked. No need to go to a different site and dig for them.

I’m sure the tutorials are also available if I go to the normal site but so far their support seems to be actively trying to make things easier to find. I like that!

PS can you imagine transparency like this coming from the Resolve team? I know I can’t!
