mp3 Files Delayed In Timeline

PostWed May 28, 2025 1:32 am

When dragging an mp3 file into the timeline, there is an added delay which is visible in the waveform as well as audible. I created both a wav and an mp3 file using Logic Pro and dragged them both in. There is no discrepancy when viewing/listening to these files when reimported into Logic Pro. Screen shots attached here.

Which Resolve and macOS version?

Can you include a link to source media which illustrates this behaviour?
Fairlight Studio Console 3 Bay • Merging Hapi • Anubis • Merging Premium VAD (3.5.0) ↔︎ Lawo VSC (1.0.0)
Mac Pro 7,1 Rack • Resolve Studio 20.0 • macOS 15.5 (24F74) ➩ 11" iPad Pro (M4) 1TB • iPadOS 18.5 (22F76)

Mac OS Sequoia 15.2
DaVinci Resolve 19.1.4

For source media, go to cloudconvert.com and convert any .wav file to a .mp3 file for free.
Drag each file into DaVinci Resolve.
Zoom in to see the offset. Although the .mp3 is late by less than a frame at 24fps, there is an audible echo on percussive material.

I learned a long time ago to never use MP3 or any highly compressed audio files when editing. They caused no end of problems back when I used adobe products and it's easy enough to convert them to WAV. I have a free program called File Converter from file-converter dot org that allows me to right click on audio files files and convert them to formats like WAV and can convert between image formats, including turning webp and SVG files into PNGs. Very useful.

I would avoid using any online file converters because you are probably giving them permission to use whatever you upload for anything they want.
