I'm trying to replicate the nicely formatted rolling titles I have been doing in Premiere Pro since 2006.

These titles have embedded graphics, which are inline with the text and move with the rolling text:

Now I'm trying this in Resolve and am not able to figure out how to get the formatting and graphics:



In addition, I had lines like this:

Name . . . . . . . . . . . . Job Title

...all tabbed and lined up with justified margins. In resolve's Text +, it's a jumbled mess.

And also, I had groups of text demarcated with large round dots from the Zapf Dingbats font throughout the title. But it seems I can have only one font in Resolve's Text +.

How do I insert the graphics and format the text? Also text of different sizes. I know it's possible to make different Texts under the Text List, but getting them all to synchronize scrolling seems it will be problematic.

tbh, i haven't attempted this since i once tried in ver 11, (having just moved from vegas, where doing such titles was a bit of a pita), and in resolve, back then, a nightmare.

in the meantime, i've basically created such titles incorporating graphic elements in photoshop, then simply rolled the graphic in resolve.

thanks andy, I've been there, done that, and screwed up mightily (though not with the guide you referred to)

i've always found fusion daunting, and have only rarely used it when i've had no alternative. i'm sure casey faris has an online tut. but i think knocking one out in ps is so much simpler, at least for me.

I know this is not using resolve but sometimes there are better tools for specific jobs.

I do my credit rolls in fusion. Tabs can be set up for different columns, which can follow the tabs you place in a word document that you copy and paste from.

Graphics can be placed where ever you like, and simply plugged into the flow.
I essentially build different pages for each style change within the roll...link them all together, vertically on top of each other, and then movie them through the screen with one transform node at the end. There is a motion curve trick to get a smooth roll no matter how long your credits are.

You can build a reference font node, which dictates what font attributes re used for all the subsequent text nodes you build. You can setup a style for Header, Body, etc. if the client changes their mind on the font, you change the style node, and all other nodes follow suit.

It took a bit to build my template, but between left and right columns, centered items and logos, it is an easily adaptable item. There are plenty of online resources for building credit rolls in fusion..Igor has a good explanation of the tabs setup, and the motion curve setup.

I'm making progress, but noticing some weird quirks.

I've made this node tree. It works.. I was able to get the logo to track the scrolling.

The next issue is how to ease in and ease out, scrolling starts and stops abruptly.




However, my displays started acting peculiar as soon as I put in the last transform node and started to keyframe the movement. When I move my mouse across certain areas of the screen, portions of the screen go black as seen below! Also, when I switched to Edit page and attempted to play the timeline to see the rate of scrolling, nothing happened. Then I realized it WAS playing, but at 0 FPS! I switched back to Fusion page and used the Speed Editor jog dial and could fluidly move through the animation. Went back to the Edit page and found I could also jog through it, so then I hit play and now it plays, but the Clean feed monitor was having a bad time displaying it. On the UI monitor, the small window with the video feed looked normal, but the external monitor clean feed looked like large portions of the text were disappearing and reappearing in the lower half of the screen, causing a severe flickering effect (not to be confused with the scroling flicker due to non integer pixel movement per frame). This was like the whole display wasn't being refreshed properly.





And finally, character level styling, enabled, and I shade in a portion of text (green boxes) and try to change the font but the whole text outside the selection also changes!

And one more thing: None of the text nodes can see Zapf Dingbats font that I use for the large bullets in my rolls. I don't have the fonts restricted either.

That will be because you are changing the font at the Text+ instance's global level, not a the (Character Level Styling) modifier level... in the Fusion page Inspector, switch to the Text+ instance's Modifiers tab.

That'll be the outdated font issue.

I would suggest easing in and easing out of keyframes is not the best approach for a credit roll.
Build a node with your text, build a node with your graphic...if you want more text, build another node with more text. I build different text nodes for each "style" in the roll. (Centered text, left right columns, graphic layouts, video playback if needed) Each one of those is a separate text node, as long as it needs to be to get all the information in place. Then i stack those nodes on top of each other, positioning them so that the start of node 2 is transformed to be just below the end of node 1, node 3 just after node 2 etc.
Again, this creates a mile long list of text in your viewer, where only a small portion of it is actually in the display area at any 1 time.

Yes you can set this all up in 1 large node if you want, but i find it way easier to have a template of different styles, and string those together at the end.

Then add a transform node at the end of all that, and that is the node you animate through the screen, using an extrapolated keyframe setup. (you keyframe 1 frame of video, moving the text up 3 lines, and extrapolate a linear motion that to the entire timeline.) This is the best way of getting buttery smooth motion. I see in the video linked above that Paul does a motion of 5 lines, I've always found 3 lines to be a better speed.

If you want to change the "speed" of the roll, you then adjust the spacing between the lines of the text, not the actually speed of the motion. This allows the smooth speed to remain, but the time to move though the amount of text decreases, simply because the text is now closer together. Of course, you have to do that spacing adjustment to every text node to keep it consistent, but in the end, you can radically change the "speed" of a roll quite easily with some subtle font size, and line spacing changes.

Thank you for pointing to the modifier tab. That was driving me crazy for two nights!

My Zapf Dingbats font comes from the same Adobe library I bought 32 years ago and the other typefaces in that library are available to DR, so I don't believe the age of the font is at issue, otherwise I would no fonts other than the Ariel, Open Sans and Times New Roman.

Re: stringing text blocks together. I get that it makes creating boilerplate text that can be reused a lot easier. Though I'm not sure if it would solve some of the problems I encountered with the logos slipping to a different vertical position when I edit the size of some lines of text above the logo. When I increase the size of a font, the text below it moves down, but the logo does not. If there's a better way to arrange the nodes so that all follows correctly, that would make this process a lot less prone to mistakes. I can see doing a last minute edit to the text and finding out at final render than the logos have shifted on top of some of the text.

That is exactly why I do the graphics pages as separate nodes.

How do you implement that? I thought my graphics WERE in a separate node, feeding a transform node, then merged with the text node and finally all that feeding a final transform node. But editing the text size does not move the graphic to compensate.
