Is this all I need for for a back up?

PostThu Jun 05, 2025 8:43 pm

Need to back up a very important legacy project (R17) to multiple drives for long term safe keeping. Is this all I will need in order to resurrect:
1. Project Archive (includes .dra and drp files)
2. Davinci R17 app.

Anything else?

The Archive should do it. ;)
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

The project archive .dra, v17 and a machine that can run v17. No guarantee that v17 will install on a future machine.

You know, just for grins we also export the following:

1) XMLs of every timeline
2) we grab stills of each timeline and export them to a self-contained "Stills" folder (Still timeline1, Still timeline2, etc.)
3) I believe Resolve 17 was the first to introduce "Export DRT," so export the individual timelines in DRT format as well.
4) if you're not 100% certain of the DRA unpacking, Media Manage all the source files and save those to a separate drive.
5) a separate DRP of the entire project just in case.

Once I do all that, I generally import the DRP to another system, open it, and then try to link to the archived source files. If all that works... then the archive was successful. It was in doing this that we realized some non-timecoded still formats (particularly JPGs) get left behind, and my theory is that Resolve and the edit lists don't know what to do with it. If the stills are converted to something like high-res ProRes 444 (even just a second), then they will have timecode and can be media-managed.

Are the XML backups needed if I plan on opening this project in Davinci 17 on the same machine?

BTW, I wasn't able to find Export DRT on R17.

Thanks for that. Yes,if I ever need to resurrect, it will be on the same legacy iMac. Maybe a different internal hard drive.
