When a project defaults to 3840 x 2160 and I import media that is 3440 x 1440 (drag and drop into media folder) and then create a timeline based on 3440 x 1440, I get prompted to change project settings and I click on ok … but that I get is 3440 x 2160 timeline?

Don't change the project settings if you intend to deliver 3840x2160. (I'm assuming 3440x2160 is a typo.) What are you trying to do and what is the ultimate delivery for this project?
3840 / 2160 = 1.78 (the 16x9 aspect ratio of UHD and HD), but 3440x1440 is 2.39 CinemaScope. That will scale in a 3440 container, and you can either letterbox it to 2.39 or set the vertical resolution to 1608, which will give you the correct 2.39 aspect ratio.
Aspect ratios, image scaling, and delivery formats are not a simple subject. If you're dealing with a specific distributor or channel, make sure you get all the specs from them in writing and follow them to the letter, so you can avoid any later technical issues.

Hi Marc,
No typo, Resolve changes the project timeline to 3440 x 2160 … it should be changing it to 3440 x 1440.
I’m NOT intending to deliver 3840 x 2160, that’s the default for my projects and I don’t change that default when I create a new project.
Resolve correctly detects the media source difference from project settings and prompts me when I use media that is NOT 3840 x 2160. BUT, Resolve doesn’t change the timeline settings correctly when I accept from prompt to change settings … the result is a timeline that is 3440 x 2160.
