Output scaling breaking Magic Mask 2

I am working on a long-term project that requires different aspect ratio versions of each edit. My workflow is to edit and grade a master version at full resolution and then duplicate the timeline and change the output scaling as needed. Then I make adjustments, like moving clips around, etc.

This used to work and I have always loved how output scaling is implemented in Resolve.

Now, I just used Magic Mask 2 for the first time (in the color page) and was impressed. But as soon as I changed the output scaling the Magic Mask was gone on all clips.

I then undid the output scaling change and it is still gone on all clips!

This is a workflow nightmare. How can I work around this?

I guess one suggestion will be to only use Magic Mask 2 at the end of the workflow, when I don't change aspect ratios anymore. But there are 3 problems with this:

- This is not really how many modern workflows work.
- It would necessitate re-doing it for all aspect ratio versions one by one.
- When there are any grading and edit changes later on I would have to completely redo it again for all versions.

Is there an elegant solution that I am not seeing?

Maybe Render in Place the clips with MM before doing any other work in the duplicate timeline?

Unfortunately, that's not a solid option since I need to be able to make both editing and grading adjustments as needed. This is not a strict offline/online kind of project...

Got it.

Well, here's the caveat about Magic Mask. You can't change the clip after applying it.

Somehow, you've got to work that idea into your workflow.

Ok, thanks!

I hope that it will become more robust and "sticky" in the future...
