Set to Frame Size/Scale to Frame Size equivalent in Resolve

PostTue Jun 17, 2025 1:28 pm

Hi

Been using Resolve for a few years now and for the life of me there is something I still can’t get my head around. It is to do with image resizing for different media and timeline resolutions.

Most common example: 4K footage on a 1080 timeline.

Coming from being an ex-Premiere user there were two settings: “Set to Frame Size” and “Scale to Frame Size”.

“Set to Frame Size” zooms the 4K clip out so it fits into a 1080 timeline (so the resolution of the clip is untouched), meaning if you then zoom in, there is still 4K detail preserved.

“Scale to Frame Size” actually alters the resolution of the clip and scales it to fit the 1080 timeline, so if you later zoom in, you’re zooming into a 1080 clip and have lost quality.

Not matter how much I read the Resolve manual or search online I haven’t found a clear explanation. As much as I love Resolve I find their naming/terminology sometimes confusing.

My main aim is to be able to preserve the 4K resolution of the clip on a 1080 timeline so I am able to zoom in, should I need to, and also have the ability to export in 4K should I want to.

Thanks to whoever can clarify :)

PS - I have a similar type of question but on frame rates however I’ll reserve that for another thread :)

Resolve only offers the equivalent of Premiere Pro's Set option. It doesn't offer a Scale option.

You can set your Input Sizing to Scale entire image to fit the full UHD resolution will be available for punch-ins.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.
