Vectorscope very dim even when sliders are all the way up

PostFri Jun 20, 2025 5:59 pm

I'm using Resolve 20 studio, and I can see my colour chips from my X-Rite Colorchecker video card on the vector scope, but they are so dim I can barely see them. I set all the sliders to the right, still can't hardly see them. I can see them when I'm about 3 inches from the screen, further back than that no chance. Really, Really Dim. any ideas?

So it's duller than this?
In any event, we'd like a screenshot.

And I fear you may be in a too bright room, because they're perfectly visible to me.

Does the color checker fill out a decent amount of the screen? If it takes up only a fraction of the full image it will of course be represented dim in the vectorscope.

Tip: ZOOM IN to the Color Checker chart and make it full-frame, and then you'll have more signal to work with.

Be aware that not even the ColorChecker Video chart has 100% reliable color patterns that will relate to the vectorscope in Rec709. I think you can rely on maximum white and maximum white values (to a point) if the chart is reasonably-lit, but everything else is dodgy.

A few images to compare.
Online tutorials show vectorscope much brighter.

Editing room is dark with blackout blinds.

Fwiw, scope trace intensity is looking pretty normal in Resolve 20 for me.
Do you see any difference if you float the scopes vs docked? Difference before/after (scope) Settings>Reset View (and reapplying required settings) and/or doing a Workspace menu > Reset UI Layout? How about the trace intensity in the other scope displays.. same issue, or only in vectorscope?

As Sven says, the brightness is down to the image size in the frame. In these two pics I have not adjusted the Vectorscope brightness.

I wish I had thought of that. Oh, wait a minute...

What exactly do you mean with "and make it full-frame", please?

I agree: for me, old as a fart, I wish I can have the vectorsope luminance (or the gamma of it) at least double of the max we have now.

Just for fun I've created a similar scenario to the OP but have a more saturated image. With the Vectorscope brightness turned up you can see the display.

I wonder if Blackmagic will increase the brightness of the Vector Scope as a fix, so we don't have to edit in a darkened room. Thanks again
