Store Color Data on Clip in Media Pool (rather thn timeline?

PostSat Jun 21, 2025 9:42 pm

Exporting from Premiere to Resolve in order to color grade my film.
Learned a lot on this Premiere forum: https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere ... 724#M21241

In Resolve, color changes seem to be stored on each clip, with its timeline.
I wish there was a way to store color data on a shot (like 380.mxf) found in the media pool. This way, if I imported a new timeline from Premiere, any shots found on both Resolve timelines would share color data.
After having done color work in Resolve, I'd be able to update my Premiere edit, export anew to Resolve, and the new Resolve timeline's shots would have the color data incorporated from the color work done on the first timeline. I'd have a two-way workflow working nicely.

(Btw, I wish I had edited in Resolve, but it's too late). Thank you.

Have a look at Remote Grades / Remote Versions.
Remote versions let all clips from the same source media file in the Media Pool share their grades automatically, either within a single timeline, or across multiple timelines in the same project. However, to enable the convenience of remote grades, you need to put DaVinci Resolve into this mode of working using the Settings window.
To enable remote grades to be used:
— Open the Project Settings, open the General Options panel, and turn off “Use local version for new clips in timeline” in the Color section.
Turning this option off only affects clips that are added to Timelines from that point onward.

Once you have it in Resolve, why not do any updates/changes there?

Jim,
You have a point. But I prefer to learn new software at an earlier stage in a given project. This is nearly the end of the road for my current one. Nevertheless, I'm going to keep your take in mind as you're not wrong.

Christoph,
Thank you. I will research that now.

Since you have already worked with local grades, you can use ColorTrace to match the clips of the new timeline to the old ones.
Open your new timeline > right-click on it in the Media Pool > Timelines > ColorTrace from Timeline
Search for your color-graded timeline and continue.
Any shot with a green frame is a 100% match, you may need to adjust the others.

This should help smooth the learning curve drastically. If you have the time to dedicate, the Beginners Guide can probably be done in a couple days.
