Crashing on start because of a title with a missing font

PostWed Jul 02, 2025 10:37 pm

This is a bug report I guess, and a potential solution if somebody comes across the same issue before the bug is fixed.

I have a new Win 11 PC, and wanted to transfer a Fusion title from my old PC (Win 10). I exported a timeline with the title in question, imported the timeline into a new project, noticed missing fonts, and exited Resolve Studio 20.0.1. I tried copying a title in a form of a .setting file from my old PC to my new PC - I copied it to the same folder as it was on old PC, tried to run Resolve on my new PC, but it crashed almost immediately, on STARTING UP, even before Project Manager shows.

That lead me to a wrong conclusion - that the cause of the crash is a missing font in the .setting file, but after experimenting a bit, it seems that that wasn't the case, because the font in that .setting title file was a different one, and I had that one installed on my new PC.

I installed the missing font (Exo 2), that was used in a title in an imported timeline, but Resolve was able to start only every few tries, until I restarted my PC, and then it finally worked properly.

So... Blackmagic Design developers, maybe check where, during Resolve startup, Resolve forcefully tries to load or use a non-existing font. The real potential issue for users is that when trying to transfer some of their timelines or projects from an old computer, Resolve on their new computer might stop working, and they might not understand why, because there is no indication that a missing font would result in crashes that say nothing about the cause (or even worse, silent crashes).
