Request : Grid display and "auto sizing" option

PostFri Dec 12, 2014 12:35 am

It would be very helpfull if Resolve could display a grid, especially when you need to rotate a shot to fix the Horizon.
Also, an "auto (re)sizing" option that automatically zoom in or out when you rotate a shot would be great.
It'd avoid leaving black bars in the corners by mistake… ;)

There is way to help with the last one. If you have a unity lut ( a lut that does not do anything ) and you look at the list of numbers like this one:

LUT_3D_SIZE 33
LUT_3D_INPUT_RANGE 0.0 1.0

0.000000 0.000000 0.000000
0.000000 0.000000 0.000000
0.000000 0.000000 0.001617
0.000000 0.000000 0.013802
0.000000 0.000000 0.029633

simply modify the very first number to:

LUT_3D_SIZE 33
LUT_3D_INPUT_RANGE 0.0 1.0

1.000000 0.000000 0.000000
0.000000 0.000000 0.000000
0.000000 0.000000 0.001617
0.000000 0.000000 0.013802
0.000000 0.000000 0.029633

Then, everytime the image approach 0 that black will tint with a very strong color. You can toss this on the track and have it to check if any black is peeking form the edges... (is a control that I do for my movies...).

This is valid for any LUT....

I have a series of reticles that I use as Timeline external mattes. That way, I can pull one up and use it as reference when I need to size something.

The advantage of my way is that I can use key level to make the grid very bright or very dark as needed. I can run all day with a Safe Action reticle and not worry about burning the monitor or projector, since it's like 20-25 units. (This is a problem with the built-in reticle display, since it only comes up very, very bright.)

When I get a chance, I'll post these somewhere and provide a link.

Might be handy. I use the Power Window boxes or gradient, which have the advantage of being dragged around. Occasionally use a still split. Main issues with horizons is that they are not nearly ever geometrically 0-degrees horizontal, even an ocean view as there is always a small amount of lens bowing, complicated by vanishing-point perspective -- magnified if there is any kind of terrain elevation. THEN the cinematographer decides they need a pan, or worse, "hunting-frame" technique.

Some monitors have built-in grids... and for corner alerts, Flanders specifically has an "active area" box, as I do agree that whenever there is a PTRZ adjustment, there is a risk of introducing a dog-ear. Always present when doing stabilizes.
