Hi Peter,

I actually am looking for the same thing. I am doing some conform work at home and want to be able to copy those changes in that timeline to our master timeline at work. Hard to believe there isn't a way to move work from one project to another.

Paul.. do you know if the XML will bring all the Resolve work over? Say we didn't do color yet. Would it just be pointing to the new media locations? Or could some work get lost in the XML transfer? From FCP to Resolve some work is sometimes lost (not supported). From Resolve to Resolve is it a perfect transfer?

+1 On this request please!

What.. you don't have ALL the answers to our deep burning Resolve questions. :) I thought maybe you had done it.. but now I see this idea only lives in your imagination for now. Not the same as the real world as we all know. Appreciate the suggestion though.

Anybody from official channels able to answer the Resolve XML roundtrip (Resolve to Resolve) question?

Thanks so much!

My own testing indicates that Resolve exports XML with links to media only. Exporting XML from Resolve and re-importing creates a new time line with no grade information. Have a look in the user manual for information on Remote grading, it may work for you.

Bringing in the media with an XML and then using ColorTrace will work fine, assuming both sessions live on the same computer. But it's not a 100% automatic process.

I've moved projects around lots and lots of times and it's not that big a deal.

I had hoped Peter C. would chime in... like a Peter hangout thread.

Marc.. did you bring in that XML from another application or was it exported from Resolve. I have exported and imported backup project files before.. it's just getting work from another system into an existing project that is the tricky part.

thanks,
Peter

I just conformed the project again and brought all the corrections over with ColorTrace. It can work. In truth, I don't have a problem using multiple projects if they're named correctly and all within the same project folder.

I have tested this, and it does bring the clip names over, but not always everything else. I was trying to use this in the conform stage, to bring in a new updated layer that was conformed on our 2nd Resolve system. Unfortunately alot of the resize effects that we did to the clips, did not transfer over.

The goal for me, would be to preserve all info in the Resolve timeline in terms of effects on the clips (and grades too would be nice). Marc, can you open more than one of those projects at a time?

It's just something I am used to be able to do on an Avid or FCP system. Copy work from one sequence to another.. even if they live in different projects. (In FCP it works since you can open more than 1 project at a time. In Avid you can open bins from other projects, so it's not a problem there either).

Where were you doing the resizes? Edit or color page?
Other grading software lets you move sequences from one project to another.
As it's just database info I would imagine BMD will implement at some point.

Hi Paul,

On this project we were doing the resizes in the Edit page. We needed to match the offline reference file and it seems more difficult to see that ref when you are in the color page (is there a way to do a split with the offline ref in 'color'?)

Wait, so one can't export a resolve project from one machine, open that file on a second machine and just point to the media locations and pick up from where one left off?
That is nuts.

No you can do that. You can't export a sequence from one project and open it in another though

PB if you were doing resizes in edit page I would think these would be included in the new xml you exported and moved.
You can resize in the color page using the ref movie in split screen, but even better with mix mode which superimposes the images you can get the repo perfect. If you use clip resize I would not expect it to be included in an exported xml, but I would think edit resize would.
But yeah it would be a lot better to just bring in a sequence from another project.

PostFri Mar 13, 2015 5:43 pm

First things first...

Updating the Peter count for this thread.. up to 4. Come on Peter C. get us to 5!

Thanks Paul. I forgot you could do a split screen (or mix) with offline ref in color page. I will have to play with that again.

I do really hope they allow us to open more than 1 project, or just somehow export a timeline from one project to another. Would really help with efficiently on projects with really short turnaround.. so we could better multi-task with our multiple Resolve systems.

thanks all,

Yeah it's seems that with color trace, half the code is already implemented. But what do I know?

Give a try to Dynamic Project Switching. It is a feature that may have appeared after this thread petered out. I'm using it now based on these instructions:

Really simple.

Select all the time time
Copy to clipboard
Open new project while closing old one.
Create new empty timeline
Paste.
Done
Works on OSX 10.10.5

Actually, you can keep both projects open at the same time with Dynamic Project Switching.

The trick is the color corrections, which may not necessarily come over with the clips. If they do not, then it's a simple matter to use ColorTrace and drop in all the color corrections and keyframes with a couple of clicks.

the other thing is:

external mattes, often don't work
all the clips go in a giant folder, none of the original folder/bin structure is retained.

Thanks Marc. did not know that. Mostly use DR for editing and a little correction. I'll look out for that gotcha.

Does copying a timeline from one (remotely edited) project into the local master project work with the 12.5beta and the new smart bins? Did anyone try?

yes it is possible to combine timelines.

Instructions for DaVinci Resolve 12.5

1. Select (CTRL + A) the all the media in the timeline you want to copy/merge with another timeline
2. Go to Edit - Media Management - press the Copy tab
2a. select "Copy All Media"
3. click "Start"
4. Go back to File - Project Manager - choose the project or timeline onto which you want to copy/add the selected tracks. Then open that project.
5. Now Paste (CTRL + V) on the timeline and the media will get added to the timeline.
6. Make sure to keep track of saving the projects separately and not to mix them up accidentally

Hope this helps

XML carrying color info only works from FCPX thats why there is a check box for it on the XML input dialog.

Color Trace is your best friend for this.
Will take sizing and tracking, plus lots of check box options.
You can also use in Manual mode if your timecode is different between your 2 timelines

Hi

I think this problem it's resolve in Davinci 16.2. trough Dynamic project switching in the projects window. Am I right?
